- The Calgary Police Service (CPS) is seeking a Lawyer for its Professional Standards Section (PSS). Reporting to the Director of Legal Services, this position will act as a Presenting Officer in disciplinary proceedings against police officers under the
- _Police Act_ and
- _Police Service Regulation. _Duties include but are not limited to:

- Prosecute allegations of professional misconduct as against police officers under the _Police Act_/_Police Service Regulation_.
- Appear before the Law Enforcement Review Board (LERB) to respond to appeals brought by police officers or public complainants.
- Maintain a caseload ensuring compliance with statutory obligations and other imposed timelines. Contribute to and participate in the development of standardized practices, guidelines and procedures for the administration of police professional conduct matters.
- Establish, monitor and continuously improve processes within the Professional Standards Section to optimize the quality of investigations and the conduct of disciplinary hearings.
- Provide advice to Professional Standards Section staff, the CPS executive and other senior members of the Calgary Police Service when appropriate and prepare formal legal opinions as required.
- Draft disciplinary charging documents.
- Review police investigations and make recommendations to the Professional Standards Section team on how the team should dispose of various complaints under the Police Act.
- Actively participate in the deliberations of the Professional Standards Section as a membership of the PSS Leadership Team.
- Review and provide legal analysis of LERB decisions, case law and changes to legislation that impact the operations of CPS' and PSS' policy and procedures.

**Qualifications**
- The position requires a law degree, (LLB or JD), a current membership in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta, or be eligible to become a member of the Law Society of Alberta.
- As this position is expected to work independently, conducting a variety of hearings and prosecutions, the incumbent is required to have a minimum of 5 years related litigation experience with excellent advocacy and negotiation skills and sound judgment.
- Thorough knowledge of administrative law, criminal law, investigative practices and rules of evidence is required.
- Requires exceptional verbal and written communication skills and a good sense of strategy on how to present a case effectively.
- Experience gained in a professional regulatory context would be advantageous.
- Strong working knowledge of the _Police Act_/_Police Service Regulation_ and Labour and Employment law practices and principles would be an asset.
- Ability to identify and raise issues of concern in a proactive fashion, while balancing and managing multiple demands in high paced environment.
