Are you looking for an opportunity to use your translation expertise in a busy ministry? Are you interested in the translation process from beginning to end? We have an opportunity for an experienced, customer-service oriented individual to translate a variety of texts from English to French.

You will also:

- review the work of freelance translators, research and establish new terminology, and review websites
- provide proofreading services
- establish efficient translation processes, design workflows and set up parameters for the translation memory and term base using a translation management system

**What can I expect to do in this role?**: In this role you will:

- Efficiently manage translation processes within a team, including designing workflows, setting translation memory parameters, and ensuring translations meet quality and timeliness standards by researching and clarifying terms and phrases.
- Liaise with external translation suppliers, negotiate contracts, and ensure translation and proofreading services align with government standards.
- Coordinate and oversee the quality of work from translation suppliers, resolving issues to meet deadlines. Provide quality control, revisions, and proofreading services as needed.
- Promote accurate and up-to-date terminology by conducting terminological research, contributing ministry-specific terms to databases, and participating in lexicon development.
- Process vendor work orders and invoices, assist with strategic translation initiatives, monitor compliance with language standards on ministry websites, and manage statistical reporting for the Government Translation Services database.

**How do I qualify?**:
**Mandatory**:

- You are proficient in English and have oral and written French language skills at the superior level. Your proficiency level will be confirmed before hire.

**Technical Expertise**:

- Knowledge of translation and writing techniques, grammar, vocabulary, syntax and punctuation to work in and produce translations that meet the needs of a public relations/information services setting
- Knowledge of accepted translation practices, conventions and principles to ensure that correct interpretation of the source document is given and the meaning and intent of original text is preserved
- Knowledge of translation management systems to establish the translation process, design workflows and set up parameters for the translation memory and term base
- Knowledge of legislation, policies, programs, directives and core businesses to provide translations on any area of ministry business.
- Ability to identify and deal with language problems which affect interpretation and understanding of parties and adapt translations to the level of the audience

**Communication and Interpersonal Skills**:

- Knowledge of organizational communication processes and protocols
- Knowledge of communications theory, practices and approaches, as well as media organization
- Oral communication and interpersonal skills to assess client's communication requirements, propose strategies by discussing client's communications goals, and explain translation principles and techniques
- Interpersonal and negotiation skills to resolve differences of opinion regarding terminology and translation issues with clients
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues and external service providers with respect to translations and linguistic matters and to negotiate project parameters and deadlines

**Research and Analytical Skills**:

- Ability to research and analyze language issues and provide expertise to clients and external service providers
- Analytical skills to provide translations which ensure the meaning, intent and feeling of the originator's message is conveyed when translating copy or reviewing outsources translations from English to French or French to English.
- Ability to assess client's needs and develop strategies for delivering the message

**Other Essential Skills**:

- Organizational and prioritization skills to coordinate multiple high-priority requests at one time
- Judgement skills to determine whether to translate in-house or outsource depending on the requirements and timelines of the request
