Standard BioTools is looking for a motivated Instrumentation Scientist in our Proteomics Operations. The team member will focus on inventing and researching new instrumentation for mass cytometry. This includes projects involving laser ablation, gas dynamics and aerosols, ion optics, ion detection, and data acquisition.

  • As a part of instrumentation research team, research and invent concepts of sub-units of mass cytometry instrumentation.
  • Interact with product management team to align capabilities of technologies with interests of future customers. Focus on inventing and researching things that are likely to be needed in the future.
  • Work with mechanical, electrical and SW engineers as well as Verification and Validation team to transfer promising research concepts into Development phase.
  • Write invention disclosures, assist Intellectual Property team with converting inventions into patent applications.
  • Interact with production and service engineers as well as quality engineers to help troubleshoot high profile, complicated malfunctions in the systems when such cases are encountered.
  • Generate and analyze data from research concepts or troubleshooting experiments.
  • Create records for the concepts, route cause analysis findings, results and conclusions in electronic notebooks.

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Physical Sciences or engineering Physics plus a minimum of 10+ years of experience working in a lab environment. Candidates with PhD will be preferred.
  • Solid background in physics in the following fields: optics, ion optics, gas dynamics, aerosols, chemical physics, electronics, thermodynamics and thermal analysis.
  • Ability to work with simulation tools such as Zemax, SIMION, and similar is desirable.
  • Ability to conduct basic data analysis (e.g. analysis in Excel, Matlab, Mathematica or Python) is required.
  • Experience in designing and testing assemblies of mass spectrometers including high precision motion stages is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of and experience with mass spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma ionization method is desirable.
  • Ability to pick up new technologies quickly and troubleshoot problems independently.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Thoroughness, attention to detail and meticulousness when researching complex hardware systems.
