Electrical Systems Design Engineer

We are seeking a skilled Electrical Systems Design Engineer to join our team at GHD. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing and implementing electrical systems, working on complex and rewarding projects that drive change and shape our communities in new and positive ways.

As an Electrical Systems Design Engineer with GHD, you will be part of a global network of skilled engineers, scientists, auditors, planners, and environmental specialists working together to leave a lasting impact on the world.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Complete condition assessments for various facilities, including report writing and participation in client meetings.
  • Prepare detailed design drawing packages for projects of varying scale, including:
    • Utility interconnection
    • Substation design support
    • Electrical system protection and coordination, including power system studies
    • MV power distribution
    • MV motor control
    • Standby power systems design
    • LV power distribution
    • LV motor control
    • Instrumentation and Control
    • Building services (lighting, security, Fire Alarm Systems, DC systems, grounding, equipment layouts)
  • Complete and review electrical design calculations.
  • Model electrical systems using ETAP, SKM, or Easy Power.
  • Model interior and exterior lighting systems.
  • Prepare contract documentation, including equipment specifications, cable/conduit schedules, installation specifications, equipment procurement documents, sub-contractor requisitions, scope-of-work, bill-of-materials, and process narratives.
  • Work as part of and potentially lead the electrical project team throughout project phases, monitoring schedule, quality of deliverables, and budgets.
  • Support during tendering and construction, including:
    • Responding to RFIs
    • Assisting GHD and client site personnel
    • Reviewing shop drawings
    • Evaluating electrical reports (short circuit, protective device coordination, arc flash, ground potential rise (GPR), harmonics, etc.)
    • Completing site inspections
    • Preparing testing plans
    • Preparing and evaluating change orders
    • Participating in project meetings
  • Prepare and lead electrical-specific meetings with clients, presenting design options, system functionality, etc.
  • Coordinate electrical system designs with other engineering disciplines (process, mechanical, civil, structural, vendors, and outside design team members).
  • Provide direction to and coordinate with the internal designers/drafter team.
  • Ensure compliance with electrical codes and standards, relevant industry standards, and regulations. Coordinate and liaison with clients and approving authorities.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Registered member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario and possess a license (Mandatory).
  • Engineering licenses or registration with relevant organizations in other provinces as well as in US states will be considered an asset.
  • 5-10 years of experience involved in the design and implementation of electrical systems, including power distribution, standby power & generators, motors and drives, and lighting, as well as a solid understanding of field instrumentation and automated equipment integration (Mandatory).
  • Fire Alarm systems design experience will be considered an asset.
  • Excellent knowledge of Canadian electrical codes and standards, US codes and standards, and relevant industry standards and regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills, demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail and continual diligence to follow-up. Ability to exercise sound judgment.
  • Self-motivated, with a strong desire to learn.
  • Well organized, able to multi-task and lead multiple projects. Strong organizational, interpersonal, and written/oral communication skills.
  • Ability to be a part of multi-functional teams with the ability to relate well and cooperate with other members of the team, to effectively coordinate activities and accomplish goals.
