Job Summary

The Benefits Specialist – Disability, is responsible for providing day-to-day delivery and support of the disability and leaves programs for Canada and USA by liaising with employees, HR Business Partners, Managers, Payroll, and third-party providers. They will c onduct analysis and reporting on current program usage and identify opportunities for process improvement.


Principal Responsibilities

  • Administer and oversee all aspects of Canadian and U.S. leaves of absences, including but not limited to disability leaves, FMLA, and company-specific policies.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employees, managers, and HR Business Partners regarding leave-related inquiries, providing timely and accurate information and guidance.

  • Conduct thorough reviews and assessments of leave requests, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and company policies.

  • Collaborate closely with employees, managers, and third-party providers to obtain necessary documentation, track leave durations, and facilitate smooth transitions back to work.

  • Act as a subject matter expert on disability-related matters, including short-term disability, long-term disability, and accommodations.

  • Coordinate and partner with external vendors, such as insurance carriers and third-party administrators, to facilitate effective leave and disability management.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records, databases, and reports related to leaves and disability cases, ensuring data integrity and confidentiality.

  • Stay current with provincial/federal, state, and local laws and regulations regarding leaves and disabilities, proactively updating policies and practices to ensure compliance.

  • Provide training and guidance to HR colleagues and managers on leave and disability management processes, best practices, and compliance requirements.

  • Provide reporting and analysis on leave programs to assist in identifying opportunities for process and program improvements

  • Support the development and implementation of wellness and employee assistance programs, fostering a culture of well-being and work-life balance.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

  • Prior experience in leave and disability management, ideally in a manufacturing or similar industry.

  • Thorough knowledge of provincial/federal and state leave laws, such as FMLA and workers' compensation, as well as relevant regulations.

  • Strong understanding of disability management processes, including short-term and long-term disability claims and reasonable accommodations.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively interact with employees, managers, and external stakeholders.

  • Detail-oriented mindset with exceptional organizational and analytical skills, capable of managing multiple cases and priorities simultaneously.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, handle sensitive information with discretion, and adhere to privacy regulations.

  • Collaborative and customer-focused approach, with a commitment to delivering exceptional service to employees and stakeholders.

  • Proficiency in HR information systems (HRIS) and leave management software

  • Proficient in Excel and comfortable using other Microsoft Office products.

  • A continuous learning mindset, staying updated on industry trends, best practices, and regulatory changes.
