Job Summary

The Office of Sustainability focuses on supporting solutions that create positive social, ecological, and economic change in university operations. Reporting to the Executive Director, Office of Sustainability, the Sustainability Manager will provide management support and continuity to existing and new sustainability programs and communication efforts, specifically around food, waste, procurement and campus and community engagement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Responsible for overall development, direction, and administration of a range of existing and new programs targeted at both the Dalhousie and external community. Liaise with key stakeholders to identify new internal and external opportunities.
  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the office’s programming including personnel, allocation of resources, information, and logistics, and serve as the main contact for event/programs.
  • Conduct and facilitate needs assessments, focus groups, etc. to gauge interest/demand for sustainability programs. As a Subject Matter Expert, make recommendations for strengthening, developing, re-aligning and/or terminating current offerings in conjunction with the Executive Director.
  • Hire, train and supervise students and casual staff. Identify, recruit and coordinate the hiring of trainers/facilitators for programs and/or events.
  • Create and modify the annual communications plan for the Office of Sustainability regarding events, programs and programming. Effectively use a variety of social media platforms to increase the visibility of programs/events and communicate with current and potential students.
  • Work with the Executive Director in program budgeting and strategic financial planning. Maintain the Office’s promotional material budget.
Note

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (such as Management, Sustainability, Environmental Studies, etc.) with three to five years related experience (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of sustainability concepts and practices, including food, waste, and procurement.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), public speaking, interpersonal skills with proven ability to liaise effectively with various departmental staff, elected officials, outside agencies and the public.
  • Experience in project planning, problem solving and program operation with strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in desktop software including MSOffice suite and various presentation tools.

  • Experience delivering community engagement, education programming and/or social marketing.
