Operations Manager for Sustainable Agriculture

Oberland Agriscience Inc. is a pioneering sustainable black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) farm located in Halifax, NS. Our mission is to close the food loop in our region while making a positive impact on the environment. Our dedicated team cultivates BSFL in a zero-waste facility, achieving remarkable productivity per hectare and producing a nutrient-rich, low environmental impact protein. By collaborating with local food producers and distributors, we upcycle organic by-products, such as spent grains from craft breweries, to cultivate BSFL on an industrial scale. Oberland is committed to contributing to a more sustainable circular economy in our area.

Utilizing an organic by-products-to-alternate protein strategy, Oberland manufactures various insect-derived products. We generate high-quality sustainable protein from larvae and a fertilizer product suitable for home gardens and agricultural lands. #closingthefoodloop

We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Operations Manager for our facility in Ragged Lake. The primary responsibility of this role is to oversee the facility and guide the team in alignment with the company's Purpose & Values, ensuring the health and safety of all team members and the overall business.

Reports to: Company Founder/CEO

Key Responsibilities:

Revenue Management (80%)

  • Assume P&L responsibility for the Grassy Lake facility.
  • Oversee all operational aspects of the Grassy Lake production facility.
  • Collaborate with the CEO, Board, and senior management team to establish company targets and KPIs.
  • Monitor organizational performance against targets and prepare regular reports for the CEO/Board.
  • Manage the facility's budget and allocate resources efficiently.
  • Oversee all capital projects and expenditures.
  • Assist the CEO and Board in fundraising activities as necessary.
  • Foster a culture of inclusion, continuous improvement, and innovation.

Human Resource Management (20%)

  • Lead, mentor, and support senior leadership in achieving company objectives while ensuring alignment with the company's Purpose and Values.
  • Assist functional area leads in identifying capacity and capability gaps and support recruitment efforts as needed.
  • Collaborate with People & Culture and Finance to provide insights on team structure, compensation, and retention strategies.
  • Build and maintain healthy relationships within the team, company, and with external partners.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field; a Master's degree is a plus.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience as a Plant Manager or in a similar senior management role within a GMP facility.
  • Strong knowledge of production management, quality control, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience working effectively with a Board is highly desirable.
  • Excellent leadership and organizational skills.
  • Ability to make sound decisions under pressure and effectively solve problems.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in ERP systems and other relevant software.
  • A strong commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality.
