The following Sessional Lecturer position is available in the Department of Arts, Culture and Media for the Fall 2024 academic session. In accordance with the Collective Agreement, this posting is being sent as an email notification to all applicants in the Department’s Applicant Pool: all Sessional Lecturers who are teaching for the Department during the current academic year or who have taught for the Department since September 1, 2005, and all persons who have submitted an application within the past twenty-four months. Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with 14:12.

Salary: in accordance with the current CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement, the stipend rate for a half course (Y, F or S), inclusive of vacation pay, will be:

  1. Sessional Lecturer I: $9,457.90
  2. Sessional Lecturer I – Long Term (Six or more years as SL I): $9,930.79
  3. Sessional Lecturer II: $10,121.77
  4. Sessional Lecturer III: $10,362.76

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Note: all positions involve completion of any course grading not finished by December 31, 2024 for F courses.

Students will be introduced to sound as a medium for art making. Listening, recording, mapping, editing, and contextualizing sounds will be the focus of this course. Sound investigations will be explored within both contemporary art and experimental sound/music contexts.

All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; participation in Studio’s exhibitions and guest lecture opportunities on campus; development, administration and marking of assignments and final portfolios; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours. Applicant to work closely with permanent faculty.

Teaching experience at the university level. Instructor must have expertise teaching sound as a studio arts medium with connections to the history and methods of experimental music and through the intellectual framework of cultural studies. Instructor must be able to teach concepts and processes to both visual art and music students. An expert understanding of recording technology, audio editing software, and spatial application of sound using a range of speaker and playback technology is required. Instructor must have an active practice in sound art, music composition, and music or sound performance/recording, with sound art as the primary part of that practice. An exhibition history involving sound in a range of contexts is required.
