Sessional Lecturer in Engineering Communication

Course Overview: The Praxis II course builds upon the foundational skills developed in Praxis I, encouraging students to apply, enhance, and refine their engineering design and communication abilities. Throughout the course, students will engage in design projects that they identify and define, focusing on real-world issues impacting communities in the Greater Toronto Area.
Course Structure: In the initial phase of the course, students will collaborate in small teams to identify, frame, and document relevant engineering challenges. The latter part of the course will involve designing, prototyping, and presenting engineering solutions to selected challenges. Students will delve deeper into the theories, tools, and practices of engineering design and communication, culminating in an open showcase where they will present their solutions to various stakeholders, including representatives from governmental and non-governmental organizations.
Position Details:
- Estimated number of positions: Up to one (1).
- Estimated course enrolment: Approximately 250 students across 10 studio sections.
- Teaching schedule includes lectures and tutorials, with a commitment to attend team meetings and debrief sessions.
Responsibilities:
- Attend two lectures weekly throughout the term.
- Participate in weekly course planning meetings and orientation sessions.
- Co-instruct two 2-hour studio sessions weekly alongside a design-focused teaching assistant.
- Evaluate and provide detailed feedback on assignments, both group and individual.
- Supervise and mentor students, offering consultations to enhance their skills in writing and presenting.
- Develop curriculum materials to support students outside of regular class hours.
- Ensure timely grading and feedback for key assignments.
- Adapt to online teaching duties if necessary.
Qualifications:
Minimum: A Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Communication, English, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies) with strong communication skills and a commitment to teaching.
Preferred: A PhD in a relevant discipline, TESL or equivalent certification in second-language instruction, familiarity with engineering communication practices, and prior teaching experience in related courses.

This position is governed by the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement.
