Job Description Summary

Provides a comprehensive range of counselling services for registered and admitted UBC students. Provides consultation services to UBC faculty and staff, and outreach services for the campus community. Participates in training and supervision as well as the development and delivery of programs which enhance student mental wellbeing.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Director, Counselling Services, Student Development and Services.

Works cooperatively as a member of a team of professionals, actively participating in and contributing to the development and delivery of effective and efficient counselling services.

Works in collaboration with the Faculties and other University departments, student organizations, and staff in other areas of Student Development and Services.

Work Performed

  • Provides individual, couples, family, and group counselling for a broad range of personal concerns.
  • Conducts assessment, including administration and interpretation of mental health measures.
  • Provides referral within Counselling Services and to other University and community resources as appropriate.
  • Participates in case management and administrative meetings as a member of a team of professionals.
  • Develops and delivers programs that strengthen students self-management capacities as well as programs to meet the needs of targeted segments of the student population based on need.
  • Develops and implements outreach educational programs for students with faculties and departments.
  • Participates in the development of policies, processes and plans that promote student wellbeing as well as policies and procedures to ensure effective counselling service delivery.
  • Provides consultation services to faculty and staff regarding the impact of policies, processes and programs on student well-being as well as specific student concerns.
  • Collaborates with student, faculties, departments and other student services to develop and deliver programs and services that enhance student learning and wellbeing such as Early Alert.
  • Coordinates the design, implementation, and analysis of program evaluation and research projects specific to area of coordination.
  • Liaises with community stakeholders, professional organizations, post-secondary institutions, and other partners to support effective counselling program development and delivery.
  • Coordinates programs, initiatives, and other special events related to the work of the unit.
  • Provides clinical supervision and training for Pre and Post-Doctoral Interns in intake assessment, individual counselling and group counselling, and supervision of practicum students
  • Performs other duties consistent with the mandate of Counselling Services as requested.
Consequence of Error/Judgement


Must be able to act with a considerable degree of autonomy and independence in the provision of psychological assistance to students while adhering to the ethical standards of the profession.

Poor professional judgment or unethical practice would be extremely detrimental to student wellbeing and in some cases could be life threatening.

It would also have a significant negative impact on public relations for Counselling Services and the University and in some cases result in legal liability for the University.

Supervision Received

Acts independently within established clinical and ethical guidelines. Works within a model of colleagial consultation and collaboration, under the direction of the Director of Counselling Services.

Supervision Given

Supervision is provided to pre and post-doctoral interns. May provide clinical supervision to other counsellors.

Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.
D. in Counselling Psychology or a related field. Eligible for certification as a Registered Psychologist in BC.Canadian Psychological Association accredited doctoral program and internship or equivalent preferred. Supervised doctoral internship completed.
A minimum of 7 years of experience in Clinical Counsellingand experience supervising Doctoral level practicum students.
University or college counselling experience preferred. Training and experience in the clinical supervision of doctoral students.

Commitment to serving the needs of a broadly diverse student population; Demonstrated ability to provide services that are responsive and sensitive to the needs of specific student populations including aboriginal students, international students, and graduate students.

Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and experience in program development, consultation and outreach.

Possession of personal attributes that facilitate teamwork and the development of effective working relationships with a wide range of students, faculty, and staff.

Appropriate course-work and training in individual and group counselling; career development, personality and career testing; measurement theory; adolescent and adult development; learning theory; cross-cultural counselling and diversity; personality theory and diagnosis and treatment of psychopathology.

Expertise and experience in treatment of a wide range of post-secondary student concerns including stress, depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, career/life planning and transition issues and sexual assault.
