Introduction:

The ICES Research and Analysis Department is seeking a motivated and collaborative Research Analyst in the Populations and Public Health Research Program to work collaboratively with ICES researchers, applying research methodology and knowledge of epidemiology in the context of health services administrative data. The Research Analyst will work with the project team, under the direction of the Principal Investigators, on Ontario Laboratory Information System (OLIS) dataset, which includes billions of semi-structured text records on thousands of different medical tests performed across over 100 laboratories, since the mid-2000's. The successful candidate's contributions towards organizing, interpreting, cleaning and preparing the research ready OLIS data will focus on the microbiology domain. They will play a critical role in modernizing research on, and surveillance of, infectious disease and antimicrobial resistance for years to come and will indirectly benefit the team and the safety of all Ontarians. The Research Analyst will also take on other projects, as assigned by the Research Program Manager. The Research Analyst will report directly to the Populations and Public Health Research Program Manager.

Responsibilities of the position include, but may not be limited to:

The Research Analyst will perform the following duties:

  1. Clean, code, structure, and create research-ready, user-friendly, standardized SAS datasets, particularly as it relates to OLIS microbiology data
    • Develop code (in Python, SAS or R) to reliably interpret and classify free-text data fields
    • Structure data so as to reflect clinical understandings of data
    • Identify, flag, and resolve potential issues with data
  2. Develop and execute a data set creation plan and analysis plan for their assigned projects;
  3. Develop SAS programs to extract and merge data from existing ICES databases according to data set creation plans to create study cohorts following analytic standards and guidelines;
  4. Carry out statistical analysis on developed study cohorts according to specifications of project analysis plans;
  5. Prepare and review analytic output (e.g., tables and reports);
  6. Liaise with project teams and colleagues to ensure project checkpoints and quality assurance reviews are conducted as required through the project life cycle;
  7. Work effectively and efficiently according to ICES policies, procedures, standards, workflow processes, documents, and requirements (e.g., complete program and project documentation according to ICES standards and guidelines);
  8. May help prepare study cohorts for students or faculty;
  9. May contribute to the writing of reports (technical reports/working papers/ICES publications/web-based summaries), abstracts, poster presentations, peer-reviewed publications, and other relevant deliverables, in collaboration with the PI or Staff Scientist;
  10. May interface with internal and external stakeholders in support of the project such as expert panels, committees, and team meetings;
  11. May facilitate the uptake of knowledge by local decision-makers across Ontario through the presentation of findings, education sessions, and one-on-one interactions as required;
  12. May contribute to or support the development of a body of knowledge in support of ICES such as updating dataset, and documentation;
  13. May contribute to other committees or activities within the department or ICES in support of ICES business plan as required;
  14. Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required:

  • Master's degree in biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology, computer science, or related field;
  • Knowledge generally gained through 2 years related experience; experience working with data from laboratory information management systems and EMRs
  • The ideal candidate is versed in R, basic text analytics using regular expressions, and has facility with cleaning, manipulating and joining large datasets using SAS, SQL, or Python;
  • Working knowledge of how to use administrative data or other large population-based data sets in health services research;
  • Understanding of the concepts of health services research and understanding of core bio-statistical analytic techniques;
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, Internet Explorer), as well as the ability to work with computerized databases;
  • Well-developed oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Ability to manage and prioritize workload responsibilities and timelines;
  • Ability to work accurately and effectively under pressure, and to meet deadlines.

This is a full-time opportunity at ICES Central. Successful candidate must reside within Ontario while working remotely and able to come into the office if required from time to time. There may be instances where in-person meetings are requested; however, ICES continues to support Flexible remote work arrangements anywhere in Ontario.
