Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre is an accredited, non-profit organization providing support services to residents of Mississauga including newcomers to Canada, youth, seniors, and families.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Supervisor of Sport, Recreation and Leisure is responsible for the onsite, day-to-day safety and operation of our MyPLAY Summer Day Camp.
The Summer Camp Site Supervisor provides coaching and mentoring to the Camp Leaders, ensuring the supervision of the children and delivery of the program takes place.
The Day Camp Counsellor leads the development, coordination, implementation, and facilitation of activities planned with a balance of recreational and enrichment components that meet the developmental needs of children 6 to 12 years of age.
These activities help children develop and strengthen physical and social skills through structured and unstructured collaborative play. All camp staff are required to attend the mandatory staff training for the two weeks prior to camp beginning.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead the development, planning, and facilitation of creative activities that engage participants in a balance of physical, social, emotional, inclusive, and integrative ways.
- Guide staff and volunteer leadership building opportunities facilitated through peertopeer support.
- Ensure regular communication with Camp Leaders, volunteers, and placement students, keeping them informed of pertinent information for the day and upcoming shifts.
- Engage in physical activity with children in the program rooms, gymnasium, and outdoor spaces while maintaining awareness and participant safety.
- Provide regular, ongoing, welltimes coaching, mentorship, guidance, and feedback for children; mindfully setting expectations and standards.
- Build individual and small group relationships with children to nurture strengths, promote social inclusion, and stimulate emotional growth.
- Model emotional maturity, respect, empathy, humility, and sensitivity when interacting with children and families who require assistance, mindful support, or are from culturally diverse populations.
- Respond appropriately when addressing challenging participant behaviours as they arise, implementing the necessary behaviour management strategies.
- Proactively manage crises and emergency situations with critical thinking, deescalate and manage conflict effectively, and solve problems creatively.
- Assist Camp Counsellors and Leaders, in problem solving cases where participants and colleagues need special support.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND ASSETS:
- Postsecondary education with, or actively pursuing a Certificate, Diploma or Degree in Early Childhood Education, Recreation & Leisure Services, Child Youth Care, Education, Social Service Worker, a related Human Service program, or related experience in a relevant field.
- Two years experience working directly with children through paid work or volunteerism.
- Experience in childbased program design, development, implementation, and facilitation.
- Knowledge and understanding of the youth experience, the assets children possess, and the difficulties children may face.
- Demonstrated experience working with children from various cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, and developmental backgrounds.
- Excellent communicator with proven ability to interact, form lasting relationships with, and gain trust of colleagues, children, and families.
- Proficiency in English and an addition language considered a strong asset, demonstrating effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Able to effectively collaborate in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team environment.
- Demonstrate an understanding of antibias philosophy, fostering community belonging and inclusivity with an EDI approach.
- Good organizational skills, able to easily adapt to change, and multitask while maintaining a high level of accuracy in data collection.
- Standard First Aid, CPR-C, AED, HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Childhood Development, and ASIST, certificates considered assets.
- Legally eligible to work in Canada; Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident status required.
