The well-being of every student is very important at BSS. We promote balance and success in the lives of our students, both inside and outside of the classroom.
Summary of Position

  • The role of the Dean of Student Well-Being ('Dean') aligns with the school's Vision, Mission and Values to encourage and support the social, emotional, mental health, personal growth and development, and academic achievement of all students as they prepare for an everchanging world. BSS is fortunate to have many great resources for our students across the whole school, and the newly created Dean position reflects a significant investment in bringing a public health framework and a systems approach to help ensure the health, wellbeing, and safety of our students.

The Dean is responsible for creating a comprehensive plan of how our resources can service our student well-being the most effectively.

Influenced by a deep understanding of girls' emotional and social development, and how girls learn, this framework is to be research driven, best in class and fully integrated into the life and culture of the school.

The Dean will partner with school leadership, faculty, and outside partners to promote student well-being, a positive mental health culture, and a healthy community, in terms of child and adolescent mental and behavioral health.

The Dean is responsible for communicating and prompting this framework internally and externally so that all stakeholders know how to navigate our internal resources so that students receive the appropriate tools for meaningful success in reaching personal and academic goals.

The Dean will champion an open and inclusive approach to mental health, helping to foster lifelong habits of wellness among all BSS community members.


Specific AccountabilitiesCreates a strategic framework to best support student well-being across the whole school that aligns with the School's Mission, Vision and Values

  • Models strategic thinking in conceptualizing and implementing a vision for an innovative and comprehensive Student Well being Department and models a problem solving, growth mindset stance for all.
  • Collaborates with direct reports and other leaders across the school to identify the right boundaries for each position in the well being framework
  • Builds, leads, manages and supports a high performing team composed of counsellors, Learning Services teachers and other program support staff.
  • Communicates the Student Well being framework and strategy with all employees, students, and families so that students and staff know what we provide and who to go to for what
  • Provides leadership in developing and implementing a comprehensive research based, student centred, social emotional learning program.
  • Builds and models meaningful relationships with students and their families, as well as building strategic relationships with outside organizations and supports
  • Ensures high quality data collection, management and reporting to support data analysis to inform program improvement.
  • Creates policies and procedures around data, specifically with health data
  • Readily engages in program reflection and improvement by monitoring and measuring the effectiveness of the Student Well being Department, recommending and implementing program improvements based on evidence

  • Leads the departmental work in creating and coordinating a map/calendar for parent education that reflect our diverse community, including boarding families, as well as the social and emotional growth of girls.
  • Provides leadership and facilitates conversations for teachers and staff so that they can learn skills to deal compassionately and appropriately with students who have a variety of emotional needs.
  • Collaborates with a number of leadership roles/teams at the school, including the Boarding team.
  • Leads counsellors and Learning Specialist teachers in planning and communicating the school transitions
  • Advocates for strategic professional learning for the department and the school.
  • Works closely with the Student Enrolment team during the recruitment cycle to develop and lead a successful transition and program opportunities for all students.
  • Attends and runs some evening or weekend presentations and events
  • Embeds diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging values into all activities
  • Commits to the Staff Growth and Evaluation process
  • Participates in professional learning and growth
