Position Summary:

The Immigrantand Transitional Education Pathway Advisor provides academic pathwayadvising for students in the School of ESL and Immigrant Education as well theSchool of Liberal Arts & Sciences, supporting laddering into other Centrefor Preparatory & Liberal Studies (CPLS) and George Brown College programs.The Advisor empowers EAP (English for Academic Purposes) and GAS (General Arts& Sciences) program students with knowledge and tools to make informeddecisions about the next steps in their post-secondary education journeys.

Key responsibilities:

Responds to inquiries and concerns from EAP and GAS students by phone, in-person (individually or in group information sessions), and through email.
Collaborates with faculty, alumni, community agencies, and other departments in the college to plan and deliver group information sessions and workshops for EAP and GAS students.
Conducts 1:1 student advising appointments, supporting EAP and GAS students in navigating the post-secondary education system, including guidance on external processes ( international credential recognition, Canadian post-secondary credential types) as well as internal processes ( George Brown College academic program selection, application, assessment, admission, financial aid).
Refers EAP and GAS students to appropriate services and resources as required ( internal college departments, external community agencies).
Collaborates with Admissions and other departments in the College to facilitate student academic transitions.
Provides program choice planning for EAP and GAS students, based on knowledge of college systems, services and programming.
Maintains accurate records of student cases, including planning, student goals, action plans, and outcomes of applicant contact through an electronic advising database.
Tracks student progress through their programming at GBC. Actively supports student retention, persistence, graduation, and success.
Creates and implements student satisfaction assessment methods.
Develops digital materials ( infographics, tip sheets, how-to videos, etc.) to support student pathway navigation.
Creates, generates, tracks, and reviews reports to inform School decision-making.
Monitors articulation and internal pathway agreements to maximize student opportunities for successful transitions. Advocates to increase student opportunities and suggests new ways to build pathways that reduce barriers for newcomers and transitional students.

Educationaland Experience Requirements:

Three-year diploma, degree or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution in Arts, Humanities, Social Services, Community Services, or Counselling.
ESL training an asset.
Minimum three (3) years of practical experience in a demanding service environment with experience advising students/applicants in an educational setting.

Skills and Attributes:

Solid research, time management, planning, and coordination skills.
Excellent communication, collaboration, teamwork, and interpersonal skills at a professional level.
Demonstrated commitment to uphold the College’s priorities on diversity and equity.

Interview process may consist of a practical skills component.
