Job Summary

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is one of five regional health authorities in British Columbia serving a diverse patient population to provide high quality, appropriate and timely health-care services. Reporting to the Vice President, Communications, Equity and Partnerships, the Executive Director, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and Anti-Racism oversees the strategic planning, partnership development and collaborative implementation of an overarching EDI and Anti-Racism framework. The Executive Director plays a pivotal role in fostering a culture of inclusivity, equity, accessibility and anti racism within the organization and is responsible for guiding behaviours that support its focus on taking an equity-led, intersectional approach to caring for people. This includes leading innovative initiatives, developing educational curriculum, addressing systemic barriers, and continually improving programs, policies and services to advance equity-led initiatives in partnership with organizational leaders throughout VCH. Working in collaboration with VCH Indigenous Health, the Executive Director advocates and supports Indigenous-specific anti-racism in an effort to address systemic racism and disparities within healthcare.

The ideal candidate brings a successful track record of leadership experience implementing transformative initiatives within a large, complex organization to advance equity, diversity and inclusion and anti-racism, preferably within healthcare or other large public sector entity. Serving as an advisor of equity and human rights issues, the successful candidate is deeply committed to creating inclusive spaces for everyone and uplifting people within equity-deserving groups.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

Masters’ Degree in Indigenous Studies, Equity, Inclusion and Diversity, Psychology, Sociology, Business Administration, Organizational Development, Human Resources or a related discipline and fifteen years of leadership experience developing and implementing organizational strategic initiatives within a large, complex organization to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion and anti-racism preferably within a health care or other large complex public sector, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge & Abilities

Demonstrated ability to build relationships, in particular ability to build credible strategic partnerships with internal and external partners across all levels of the organization. Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to the diverse patient populations VCH serves. Demonstrates a deep commitment to supporting First Nations and Indigenous communities and has the knowledge and understanding to meet the needs of the organization in living its commitment to Indigenous cultural safety and reconciliation to uplift Indigenous populations. Practices the recognition, inclusion and support of all types and aspects of diversity at all stages of engagement, with an understanding of the barriers experienced by individuals from equity-deserving groups. In-depth knowledge of anti-racism principles, health care disparities, and cultural competence. Strong understanding of relevant laws, regulations, and accreditation standards related to EDI and health care. Collaborative, creative, and genuinely cares; this leader walks the talk and has a reputation for openness, honesty, integrity, resilience, and self-confidence. This person has strength in fostering meaningful relationships through mutual respect, trust, and understanding to effect health system transformation. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization. Proven track record of developing and implementing successful EDI initiatives, including training programs, policy development, and community engagement efforts. Analytical mindset with the ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data to drive decision-making and measure impact. Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, with a passion for promoting social justice and health equity.
