The Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board invites qualified applicants for a full-time (35 hours/week) Indigenous Advisor (K-6): Student Support and Engagement position with duties to commence September 3, 2024. As a member of the Board’s Indigenous Education Services Team, and reporting to the Superintendent Responsible for Indigenous Education, the Indigenous Advisor will collaborate within a faith-based, integrated system team supporting the Board’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan, the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations, and the Board Action Plan on Indigenous Education. The Indigenous Advisor will be responsible for providing consultation to the Student Achievement Team in implementing revised Ontario Curriculum (Primary/Junior focus) and will provide educators and support staff with cultural competency training. The Indigenous Advisor will also work with individual Indigenous students and their families, or to small groups in the school, home, or community. The Position is subject to annual budget approval and/or annual system organization and Ministry funding continuance.

Duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

Develop partnerships and liaise with local Elders, Faith Keepers, and Indigenous organizations and communities from Six Nations of the Grand River and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

Support the Indigenous Education Council (IEC) and Indigenous Education School Reps.

Support schools in creating culturally safe spaces for Indigenous students to build trusting relationships.

Build cultural competency among staff and students through the facilitation of presentations and workshops.

Directly support educators in schools in the implementation of revised curriculum with authentic, approved, and accurate resources that are specific to the land base.

Provide guidance and consultation to school staff to support engagement of all primary and junior learners.

Assist primary and junior teachers and Early Childhood Educators in developing and facilitating lessons on Haudenosaunee culture and storytelling.

Support Librarians, Library Resources Technicians, the Indigenous Education Curriculum Consultant, and the IEC in developing an accurate and appropriate resource bank to support the delivery of curricula and to audit current inventory of resources in elementary schools.

Advocate and support learning opportunities in local Indigenous culture, history, and teachings for all students.

Facilitate learning opportunities and workshops for Indigenous Education School Reps and other staff.

Assist in the coordination of Jordan’s Principle applications and implementation of resources and supports.

Support the Mental Health Leadership Team in designing Strategy for crisis intervention, assessment, system navigation and threat risk assessment for Indigenous Students and families.

Assist the Mental Health Leadership Team in monitoring student attendance and developing reengagement strategies to improve problematic attendance.

Act as a liaison between home and school by interpreting the resources and policies of the school for the family.

Assist Student Support Services in navigating pathways to cultural services for Indigenous Students and their family and support student transitions.

Organize and facilitate cultural events for Indigenous students and families.

Work with Indigenous students to develop and implement Traditional language, arts, and cultural programs, and land based experiential learning opportunities.

Assist schools in organizing and facilitating classroom and/or school presentations and land-based experiential learning opportunities on topics related to Indigenous Education.

Represent BHNCDSB at external meetings on Indigenous education as appropriate.

Provide/support for weekend and after-school activities;

Other duties as assigned.

Candidates must possess:

A minimum of (5) years working with primary and junior age students in an educational environment.

Experience in Haudenosaunee Storytelling.

Awareness of the impacts of colonialism specific to Indigenous communities on Six Nation of the Grand River and in the Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk Counties.

Position requires daily travel and therefore must hold a valid driver’s license and have access to transportation.

Sound knowledge of Indigenous Education Resources (books, video, photographs, maps, documents, electronic materials, and other library materials).

Preference will be given to candidates with:

Demonstrated knowledge of current educational research and practice that advocates for Indigenous learners.

Demonstrated experience in early childhood education.

Demonstrated understanding of developing educational and/or cultural resource inventories and audits.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and mediation skills.

Experience in technology to engage staff/students and/or community.

Excellent planning and organizational skills.

Ability to work independently and as an effective team member.

Demonstrated presentation and facilitator experience.

Demonstrated leadership, advocacy, and innovation at the school and/or board level in promoting Indigenous Education.

As a Catholic Learning Community, the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board provides faith formation and academic excellence, which enables our graduates to live a life of love and service in Christ. The Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board provides a Christ-centered education to approximately 12,000 students within 28 elementary schools, 3 secondary schools and a multisite Alternative Education school and 3 administrative offices.

The Board currently employs over 1500 permanent staff and approximately 350 casual and occasional staff which includes teachers who are supported by a team of consultants, principals and administrators and non-academic staff who work to ensure the best possible facilities, supports and resources are available to our students and the system. The Board encompasses the broad geographical area of the City of Brantford and the counties of Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk. We are located approximately one hour west of Toronto, one hour east of London and one hour south of Kitchener-Waterloo.
