Overview

Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) stands as a distinguished Indigenous Institute, acknowledged by various stakeholders including communities, governmental bodies, and educational institutions, as a Centre of Excellence for Indigenous Knowledge. SNP provides a range of educational offerings, including postsecondary, secondary, and trades education, while fostering partnerships with multiple publicly funded Ontario Universities and Colleges, as well as collaborating with Indigenous-owned post-secondary institutions.

Role Summary

The Indigenous Mental Health Counsellor, as part of the Student Affairs Team, will report directly to the Manager of Student Affairs. This role is pivotal in nurturing student development, success, and retention through the design and delivery of a comprehensive suite of psychological and educational services aimed at enhancing academic performance and overall well-being. The position will collaborate closely with Student Success Officers and Accessibility Advisors to implement diverse mental health strategies throughout the organization, aligning with the cross-campus Student Mental Health Strategy. Upholding Human Rights Legislation, AODA compliance, and the National Standard of Canada for Mental Health and Well-Being for Post-Secondary Students is essential.

Key Responsibilities

1. Personal Counselling

  • Crafting and executing trauma-informed methodologies to benefit students across various services;
  • Delivering direct counselling interventions addressing a wide array of social issues pertinent to the student demographic, particularly high-risk individuals and emergency scenarios, guided by Indigenous best practices;
  • Partnering with students to identify, evaluate, and create effective wellness plans in consultation with the Manager as necessary;
  • Implementing interventions based on assessments and established plans using recognized clinical practice models, including group counselling techniques;
  • Fostering and maintaining appropriate therapeutic relationships with students;
  • Assisting students in recognizing and resolving emotional and interpersonal challenges impacting their academic success and holistic development;
  • Providing counselling through scheduled in-person or virtual appointments, remaining available for crisis situations with flexible hours;
  • Consulting and advocating with relevant institutional and community resources to facilitate service delivery;
  • Representing students in requests for special academic considerations;

2. Program Development and Implementation

  • Collaborating with the Student Affairs team to design and plan mental health initiatives based on student feedback and participation;
  • Incorporating Hodinǫshǫ:ni knowledge and practices in the development and execution of mental health and wellness activities;
  • Addressing the demand for culturally specific wellness programs in partnership with Cultural Support Workers;
  • Formulating, executing, and reviewing the SNP Student Mental Health Strategic Plan;
  • Participating in the evaluation of counselling services effectiveness, including the collection of key service assessment metrics;
  • Assisting in the creation of student surveys;

3. Learning and Development

  • Utilizing quantitative and qualitative metrics to review and recommend enhancements to service delivery models;
  • Engaging in professional development activities to stay updated with advancements in the field;

4. Student Health & Safety

  • Accurately evaluating individual functioning levels and risks of personal harm;
  • Providing debriefing sessions for clients following traumatic events;
  • Maintaining professional boundaries with clients;
  • Creating personalized self-care plans for students;

5. General Administration

  • Supporting the establishment of goals and objectives for SNP Student Wellness initiatives;
  • Ensuring the confidentiality of client records in accordance with accepted standards;
  • Documenting case notes, including client histories and treatment plans;
  • Preparing referral reports for other health professionals;
  • Responding to inquiries from students through various communication channels;
  • Carrying out administrative tasks related to support services, including data collection and communication with team members;
  • Co-chairing the SNP Student Mental Health Committee;
  • Adhering to all SNP policies and procedures;
  • Performing other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • A Master's level education is required - M.S.W. (Masters of Social Work), M.A. (Counselling/Clinical Psychology), Ed. (Counselling Psychology) or other relevant Master level qualifications will be considered;
  • A minimum of 1 year, with 3 years preferred, of professional experience in individual and/or group counselling;
  • Formal training in counselling theories, trauma-informed care, and Indigenous healing methods is essential;
  • Registration with the appropriate regulatory body related to the individual’s professional discipline is mandatory;
  • Current certification in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and Mental Health First Aid is advantageous.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Exceptional communication skills, particularly in written expression;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy, organization, and professional judgment;
  • Demonstrated abilities in strategic thinking, coordination, and policy implementation;
  • Capacity to work under pressure while managing schedules and timelines;
  • A comprehensive understanding of Hodinǫshǫ:nih history, culture, values, and contemporary issues;
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively, reflecting Hodinǫshǫ:ni values;
  • Familiarity with standard desktop computing applications;
  • Knowledge of relevant privacy legislation.
