Position Overview

The Indigenous Mental Health Counsellor is an integral member of the Student Affairs Team, reporting directly to the Manager of Student Affairs. This role necessitates a collaborative approach with various stakeholders within Six Nations Polytechnic. The primary focus of the Indigenous Mental Health Counsellor is to enhance student development, success, and retention through the provision of a comprehensive suite of psychological and educational services. These services aim to improve academic performance and foster personal and social well-being. The position also collaborates with Student Success Officers and Accessibility Advisors to develop and implement diverse mental health strategies across the institution.

Key Responsibilities

1. Personal Counselling

  • Designing and implementing trauma-informed practices tailored to student needs;
  • Providing direct counselling interventions addressing a wide array of social issues relevant to the student demographic, particularly high-risk individuals;
  • Working collaboratively with students to assess, develop, and execute effective wellness plans;
  • Utilizing accepted clinical practice models to implement interventions based on assessments;
  • Establishing and nurturing therapeutic relationships with students;
  • Assisting students in recognizing and resolving emotional and interpersonal challenges impacting their academic success;
  • Offering counselling through scheduled appointments and remaining available for crisis situations;
  • Coordinating with community resources to facilitate comprehensive service delivery;
  • Advocating for students in matters requiring special academic consideration.

2. Program Development and Implementation

  • Collaborating with the Student Affairs team to create mental health initiatives based on student feedback;
  • Incorporating Indigenous knowledge and practices into the planning and execution of wellness activities;
  • Responding to the demand for culturally relevant wellness programs in partnership with Cultural Support Workers;
  • Developing and reviewing the Student Mental Health Strategic Plan;
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of counselling services and collecting key metrics for assessment;
  • Assisting in the creation of student surveys to gather feedback.

3. Learning and Development

  • Reviewing and recommending enhancements to service delivery models based on quantitative and qualitative data;
  • Engaging in professional development to stay current in the field.

4. Student Health & Safety

  • Assessing individual risk levels and providing necessary debriefing after traumatic events;
  • Maintaining professional boundaries with clients;
  • Creating personal self-care plans for students.

5. General Administration

  • Supporting the establishment of goals for student wellness initiatives;
  • Ensuring confidentiality of client records in accordance with professional standards;
  • Documenting case notes and treatment plans accurately;
  • Preparing referral reports for other health professionals;
  • Responding to inquiries from students via various communication methods;
  • Managing administrative tasks related to support services, including data collection and communication with team members;
  • Co-chairing the Student Mental Health Committee;
  • Adhering to all institutional policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., M.S.W., M.A. in Counselling Psychology) is required;
  • Minimum of one year of professional counselling experience is necessary, with three years preferred;
  • Formal training in counselling theories and trauma-informed care is essential;
  • Registration with the appropriate regulatory body is mandatory;
  • Current certification in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and Mental Health First Aid is advantageous.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Exceptional communication skills, particularly in written form;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy and professional judgment;
  • Competence in strategic thinking and policy implementation;
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure;
  • Understanding of Indigenous history, culture, and contemporary issues;
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively;
  • Familiarity with standard computing applications and data privacy regulations.
