Role Overview

As a vital member of the Student Affairs Team, the Indigenous Mental Health Counsellor will report directly to the Manager of Student Affairs while fostering collaborative relationships with various stakeholders at Six Nations Polytechnic. This role is dedicated to enhancing student development, success, and retention through the design and delivery of a comprehensive suite of psychological and educational services aimed at improving academic performance, personal effectiveness, and overall well-being. The position plays a crucial role in the cross-campus Student Mental Health Strategy and is tasked with adhering to Human Rights Legislation, AODA compliance, and the National Standard of Canada for Mental Health and Well-Being for Post-Secondary Students. The Indigenous Mental Health Counsellor is expected to conduct all responsibilities in alignment with the governance values and operational policies of Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP), while promoting positive interactions with staff, students, stakeholders, and the broader community, thereby contributing to a culturally affirming educational environment reflective of Hodinǫshǫ:nih/Rotinonhson:ni principles of Ga'nigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind).

Key Responsibilities

Personal Counselling

  • Creating and implementing trauma-informed strategies to support students across various services;
  • Delivering direct counselling interventions and follow-ups addressing a wide array of social issues pertinent to the student demographic, including high-risk individuals and emergency situations, guided by Indigenous best practices;
  • Collaborating with students to assess, develop, and execute effective wellness plans in consultation with the Manager as necessary;
  • Applying interventions based on assessments and plans utilizing established clinical practice models, including group counselling techniques;
  • Establishing and nurturing appropriate therapeutic relationships with students;
  • Assisting students in identifying and resolving emotional and interpersonal challenges that may hinder their academic success and holistic development;
  • Providing counselling through scheduled in-person or virtual appointments, while remaining available for crisis situations as they arise, with flexibility in working hours;
  • Consulting, liaising, and advocating with relevant institutional and community resources, such as mental health, medical, and social services to facilitate effective service delivery;
  • Advocating for students in matters requiring special academic consideration;

Program Development and Implementation

  • Working collaboratively with the Student Affairs team to design and plan mental health initiatives based on student feedback and participation;
  • Incorporating Hodinǫshǫ:ni knowledge and practices in the development and execution of mental health and wellness programs;
  • Addressing the demand for culturally specific wellness programs and activities for students, in collaboration with Cultural Support Workers;
  • Formulating, executing, and assessing the SNP Student Mental Health Strategic Plan;
  • Participating in the evaluation of counselling services effectiveness, including the collection of key service assessment metrics;
  • Assisting in the creation of student surveys;

Learning and Development

  • Reviewing and recommending enhancements to service delivery models based on quantitative and qualitative metrics;
  • Engaging in professional development activities to stay updated with advancements in their specialized field;

Student Health & Safety

  • Conducting accurate assessments of individual functioning levels and risk of personal harm;
  • Providing debriefing sessions for clients following traumatic events;
  • Maintaining professional boundaries with clients;
  • Creating personal self-care plans for students;

General Administration

  • Supporting the establishment of goals and objectives for SNP Student Wellness initiatives;
  • Ensuring the confidentiality of client records in accordance with accepted standards of practice;
  • Documenting case notes, including client histories and treatment plans;
  • Preparing referral reports for other health professionals, including general practitioners and specialists;
  • Responding to inquiries from new and existing students through various communication channels;
  • Carrying out administrative tasks related to support services, including data collection, statistical reporting, and team communication;
  • Serving as Co-chair for the SNP Student Mental Health Committee;
  • Adhering to all SNP policies and procedures;
  • Performing other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • A Master's level education is essential - M.S.W. (Masters of Social Work), M.A. (Counselling/Clinical Psychology), Ed. (Counselling Psychology), or equivalent professional Master level education will be considered;
  • A minimum of 1 year of professional practice in individual and/or group counselling is required, with 3 years preferred;
  • Formal training in counselling theories, trauma-informed care, and Indigenous healing methods is mandatory;
  • Registration with and insurability through the relevant regulatory body associated with the individual's professional discipline is required (i.e., CRPO, OCSWSSW, or CPO);
  • Current certification in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and Mental Health First Aid is advantageous.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Exceptional communication skills, particularly in written expression (i.e., impeccable spelling, grammar, and professional tone);
  • Strong interpersonal skills encompassing communication, empathy, organization, negotiation, confidentiality, and professional judgment;
  • Proven competencies in strategic thinking, coordination, analysis, policy implementation, and adaptability to change management;
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure while managing schedules and deadlines;
  • A comprehensive and current understanding of Hodinǫshǫ:nih history, culture, values, contemporary issues, community priorities, and stakeholders;
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively, embodying Hodinǫshǫ:ni values of Ga'nigohi:yo:;
  • Familiarity with standard desktop computing applications, including spreadsheets, word processing, and database software on the Windows 2010 (or later) operating system;
  • Understanding of Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), Ontario's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), and Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).
