Job Summary:

The Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority Coordinator will be an integral member, primary resource and a knowledge keeper who will plan and coordinate the delivery of trauma-informed health and cultural support services with a focus on children, youth and families, both on-reserve and off-reserve.

In collaboration with Anishinaabewaadiziwin Team, the Coordinator will work to integrate activities that align with Pimatisiwin [Way of Life] model which delivers culturally safe, trauma informed, mental health and wellness and cultural support services to clients serviced by SLFNHA. This includes coordinating cultural programming specific to different age-groups promoting cultural identity, youth mentorship and programming such as, sports-based and land-based activities, life path teachings, sharing circles and counselling services. Under the direction of the Director, the Coordinator will work with the healing and wellness team to ensure the clients have opportunities for skills development, and cultural knowledge through life path teachings and land-based practices.

Qualifications:

  • Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment)
  • Ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialect in the Sioux Lookout district.
  • Knowledge of the people, culture, language, and the health priorities of the First Nations communities in the Sioux Lookout District.
  • A certificate, diploma, or degree in a health-related field and/or Indigenous learning but experiential equivalent could be accepted as determined by SLFNHA.
  • Two years of related work experience or experience deemed acceptable by SLFNHA.
  • Previous experience providing training preferably in First Nation traditional and cultural topics.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be willing and able to travel into the communities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and competence in, serving culturally diverse populations; knowledgeable of First Nations' people, history, culture, health priorities and social issues.
  • The ability to perform the requirements of the position on a regular basis.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced working environment.
  • Knowledge of First Nations culture, history, health priorities, geographic realities and social conditions with remote First Nations communities.
  • Demonstrates practical and historical knowledge of intergenerational trauma, stress and cultural repression and contemporary issues facing First Nations people.
  • Experience in wholistic approaches to care.
  • A strong understanding and working knowledge of trauma informed care.
  • Ability to complete the duties of the position on a regular basis.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with Anishinaabewaadiziwin Team and Elders to ensure that 'how we do things' is consistent to the culture and values of the First Nations people and the communities we serve.
  • In collaboration with Anishinaabewaadiziwin team provide cultural and trauma informed training to employee's and clients of SLFNHA.
  • In collaboration with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and traditional practitioners; plan and coordinate trauma-informed, age appropriate emotional and cultural support services with a focus on children, youth and families.
  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate land-based activities specific to different age groups, including children, youth and families; promoting family support rooted in traditional values and teachings.
  • In collaboration with the Anishinaabewaadiziwin Team, organize, and facilitate gatherings, ceremonies, and access to cultural guidance such as traditional teachings and emotional support by Elders, and Knowledge Keepers.
  • Support family-based approaches, traditional teachings in healing processes
  • Coordinate group-based cultural counseling and support, grounded in First Nations worldviews and healing practices.
  • Assist clients in navigating cultural and spiritual resources within their community or through SLFNHA services.
  • Conduct educational workshops, and community outreach initiatives to promote cultural awareness, understanding of cultural healing and wellness practices.
  • In collaboration with cultural support staff and Elders, support the delivery of culturally relevant workshops and training opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records and reports in accordance with SLFNHA policies.
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and ongoing professional development opportunities.
  • Support crisis intervention as appropriate, using a trauma-informed and culturally safe approach.
  • Promote awareness and understanding of First Nations healing practices among service providers and community members.
