DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in therapeutic activities such as, but not limited to, 1-1 cultural advice and guidance, smudging, traditional healing, and knowledge sharing.
  • Engage families in the planning and implementation of regular cultural teachings.
  • Anishinaabe language instruction and ceremony participation
  • Planning and ensuring appropriate material, equipment, and resources are readily available for cultural events.
  • Provide a monthly schedule with planned events to programs.
  • Foster an appreciation of family's identity through knowledge and pride of who they are.
  • Teach family's and staff proper protocols regarding ceremonies, procedures of approaching Elders for guidance or knowledge.
  • Ensure all staff and families follow protocols within ceremony.
  • Coordinate and/or teach cultural craft-making sessions (sewing, beading, baskets, medicine pouch making)
  • Coordinate cultural land-based activities such as harvesting animals, fish, berry picking, fasting, etc. depending on season.
  • Create and maintain Elder connections for families
  • Maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
  • Any additional duties as assigned.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

The Cultural Coordinator is supervised by and accountable to the Treatment Services Manager, with ultimate accountability to the Director of Treatment Services for overall performance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Exceptional knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, protocol, as well as having experience working with Elders is essential.
  • Speaking an Anishinaabe language or ability to teach and learn with families is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge and awareness of Anishinaabe culture and history, with particular emphasis on family violence, child welfare, the impacts of trauma, intergenerational trauma, Anishinaabe youth engagement and community outreach.
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be available to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Understanding of mental health, addictions, and trauma.
  • Technological skills with Windows, Microsoft suite (including Outlook email and calendar, Excel, Word, PowerPoint), as well as cloud-based software including OneDrive and SharePoint
  • Valid driver's license and ability provide a clean driver's abstract.
  • Ability to provide clear criminal records check with Vulnerable Sectors Screen upon hire.
  • Fluency in an Anishinaabe dialect (Cree, Ojibway or Oji-Cree) is preferred

Education

  • Post Secondary education considered an asset

Experience

  • Experience with childcare or early childhood education
  • Experience working with Anishinaabe children, youth and families is essential.
  • Experience in organizing functions, events, and land-based outings is required.
  • Minimum of three years of work experience within an Anishinaabe organization or community considered an asset.
  • Skills and experience in presenting workshops and facilitating groups.
  • Experience in program planning, development, and implementation.
