POSITIONSUMMARY
Reporting to the Sioux Mountain Public School administration, the First Nations Wellness Coordinator will support Indigenous students with making connections to culture and identity. They will support positive student mental health focused on emotional, spiritual, behavioral and physical well-being grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing and being.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The First Nations Wellness Coordinator will advise and consult on Indigenous student well-being by providing insight through a culturally informed lens. They will advocate on behalf of students, be an active advisor in supporting student goal setting and identify and address challenges as well as school and community barriers that impact student success. They will promote social and emotional wellness through proactive, strengths-based approaches that affirm students' cultural identities and experiences while also facilitating connections with community partners to support wellness-related programming, events, and mental health promotion initiatives. The position may require working outside of the normal school day hours.
QUALIFICATIONS
First Nations lived experiences that have shaped their personal identity, identifies their connection and relationship with their community, ongoing learning and growth with First Nation language and is connected to ceremony and culture.
A College diploma or University degree in Social Work/Social Service Work/Education/Indigenous Studies or equivalent experience in a related field of work.
- Indigenous language fluency (Anishinaabemowin, Oji-cree, Cree and/or Michif) is preferred.
- Experience working with Indigenous children and families; understanding of current and emerging issues concerning Indigenous student health, mental health, and wellness.
- Abiilty to lead and incorporate land-based cultural teachings into curriculum.
