Pelican High Peak Family Healing Lodge operates as part of Ka-Na-Chi-Hih, bringing our services to Sioux Lookout to complement our other centres in Thunder Bay and Timmins, Ontario. SUMMARY:

The Cultural Coordinator will coordinate and support all aspects of cultural knowledge transfer and planning within Pelican High Peak Family Healing Lodge. The Cultural Coordinator will be responsible for the development and delivery of an innovative and engaging cultural program for families who attend Pelican High Peak Family Healing Lodge to help connect and support their success. As Cultural Coordinator, you will provide traditional teachings and ceremonies in a safe and acceptable environment and coordinate access to Elders and Traditional people to meet the needs of family, families, and staff. Finally, you will work to promote cultural awareness, safety, and competency within Pelican High Peak as a whole.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in therapeutic activities such as, but not limited to, 1-1 counseling, smudging, grounding activities, stress reduction, conflict resolution, healthy relationships, group therapy, Alateen and by maintaining an effective recovery focused environment.
  • Engage families in the planning and implementation of regular cultural teachings.
  • Anishinaabe language instruction and ceremony participation
  • Ensure appropriate material, equipment and staffing are provided based on event.
  • Assist in conducting ceremonies, such as sweat lodge and pipe ceremonies.
  • Facilitate smudging, Natural Law teachings, medicine wheel teachings, and other Aboriginal Spiritual beliefs
  • Provide a monthly schedule with planned events to programs and include list of materials needed.
  • Foster an appreciation of family's identity through knowledge and pride of who they are.
  • Teach families and staff proper protocols regarding ceremonies, procedures of approaching Elders for guidance or knowledge.
  • Ensure all staff and family follow protocols within ceremony.
  • Coordinate and/or teach cultural crafts making sessions (sewing, beading, baskets, medicine pouch making)
  • Coordinate cultural land-based activities such as harvesting animals, fish, berry picking, fasting, etc. depending on season.
  • Create and maintain Elder connections for families.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

The Cultural Coordinator is supervised by and accountable to the Treatment Services Manager, with ultimate accountability to the Director of Treatment Services for overall performance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Exceptional knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, protocol, as well as having experience working with Elders is essential.
  • Experience working with Anishinaabe children, youth and families is essential.
  • Experience in organizing functions, events, and land-based outings is required.
  • Speaking an Anishinaabe language or ability to teach and learn with family is essential.
  • Strong knowledge and awareness of Anishinaabe culture and history, with particular emphasis on family violence, child welfare, the impacts of trauma, intergenerational trauma, Anishinaabe family engagement and community outreach.
  • Post Secondary education considered an asset
  • Minimum of three years of work experience within an Anishinaabe organization or community considered an asset
  • Skills and experience in presenting workshops and facilitating groups.
  • Experience in program planning, development, and implementation.
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabe language an asset.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Driver's License and be willing to travel if required.
  • Must provide a clear vulnerable sector check.
  • Must be available to work some evenings and weekends

Education

  • Post Secondary education considered an asset

Experience

  • Experience with childcare or early childhood education
  • Experience working with Anishinaabe children, youth and families is essential.
  • Experience in organizing functions, events, and land-based outings is required.
  • Minimum of three years of work experience within an Anishinaabe organization or community considered an asset.
  • Skills and experience in presenting workshops and facilitating groups.
  • Experience in program planning, development, and implementation.
