**Hours**: 35 hours per week, Tuesday - Saturday 9-5pm

**About Second Stage**: 

Cowichan Women Against Violence Society provides safe and supportive housing for women and children who have experienced domestic violence or other forms of trauma. Our second-stage housing program offers a transitional environment where women can rebuild their lives, develop independence, and gain the skills needed for long-term stability_._ Our program has suites for women with up to 5 children as well as bachelor suites.  

**Position Overview**: 

The Child & Youth Worker supports children & youth in navigating the complexities of trauma recovery while fostering a secure and nurturing environment that works to provide safety and build resilience.



**Key Responsibilities**:
**Team Engagement**

Work with your team to
- promote feminist and trauma-informed practices. 
- foster an inclusive, equitable, and diverse workplace culture. 
- create an environment of transparency and confidentiality. 

**Client Services**
- Support the emotional needs of children & youth in the program by providing a safe, comfortable and welcoming atmosphere.
- Provide one-to-one sessions to support children & youth as needed and appropriate.
- Provide parenting support to mothers coping with the impact of violence and trauma.
- Providing supervised child minding to allows mothers to attend appointments and programming.
- Maintaining play and activity supplies in a clean, repaired and orderly manner
- Plan and deliver age-appropriate programming for children & youth that addresses the impact of violence and trauma they may have experienced.
- Plan and deliver recreational opportunities for women and their children, particularly on weekends.
- Support youth in setting and achieving goals using a strength-based approach.
- Maintain awareness of other community resources for children and youth and refer as appropriate.
- Consults with social workers, other professionals, and family when appropriate
- Maintains accurate and current programming and client files
- Work with other internal and external programs to provide supports.

**Administrative & Facility Duties** 
- Maintain accurate documentation and records as per CWAVS policies.
- Maintain a safe working environment, following all health and safety protocols as outlined in CWAVS Polices and Procedures.



**Qualifications** 
- Diploma or higher in child & youth care, or equivalent in experience. 
- 2+ year of experience working with children and youth
- In-depth understanding of family violence and the dynamics and impacts of violence and abuse on women and children.
- Knowledge of normal childhood development.
- Experience in one-on-one support and group facilitation with children and youth.
- Experience working in women’s organizations and non-profit societies.
- Familiarity with community resources for women and children in asset.

**Skills & Abilities** 
- Ability to relate effectively to children and youth, assess their needs, and to communicate with sensitivity and understanding with mothers impacted by violence.
- Ability to develop programming and creative activities for children & youth impacted by violence.
- Ability to deal with traumatic information including stories of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and engage effectively in a team
- Ability to deliver service in a non-judgemental, respectful, client-centred, trauma-informed manner
- Ability to develop and nurture relationships across various cultures, respecting diverse protocols, beliefs, and traditions.

**Other Requirements** 
- First Aid Certificate. 
- Successful Criminal Record Check.
