**Your role**
Passionate about weather and science? Have a knack for telling stories about why weather, science and climate change matter? Have a talent for digital tools and on-air presentation? Then you might be the next CBC News local and network weather and science specialist.
CBC News is seeking a Broadcast Meteorologist/Science Specialist based in Vancouver. This is a temporary position for 15 months.
You will analyze and interpret meteorological data/reports, using models, synoptic analysis, satellite and radar imagery, warnings and watches, monitor changing weather conditions and severe weather warnings, for local, national and international weather reporting to be used for weather broadcasts including special forecasts and commentary for breaking weather events.
In addition, as a science specialist, on a daily basis you will track developing science, climate change and natural disaster stories and issues, and deliver daily stories on how those developments affect us. You will analyze and interpret scientific data, published papers, conference findings, government actions and policies, etc. and be prepared to communicate their significance clearly and compellingly to CBC News audiences at a local and national level.
You will deliver those forecasts, stories and analysis on a daily basis on CBC’s network and local television, local radio and online, and our streaming platforms.

Work is governed by CBC journalistic and programming policies and standards. Advice and guidance are regularly available but initiative and independent judgment are expected.
Close collaboration with different programming units is essential.
**Responsibilities**:
- Develop and maintain contacts with a variety of sources.
- Conduct analysis of facts and information from Environment Canada and other data providers, analyses and draws conclusions or raises issues requiring further investigation.
- Go live on air without a script or teleprompter.
- Gather, analyze, interpret and report information from various sources.
- Select elements to include in reporting, their order, length and sequence, as well as the method of transition from one element to another.
- Contribute ideas or program content; participate in preparation of program objectives.
- Prepare your own weather graphics for on-air or digital presentation.
- Critically analyze and edit material provided by others.
- Liaise with other staff to ensure required material is available.
- Present information and/or analysis on air in a variety of formats including television, radio and online.
- Follow particular areas of current public interest or concern, including climate change, extreme weather, wildfires, and natural disasters.
- Prepare and write scripts, continuity and headlines.
- Perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the newsroom, program unit or station.
- Participate in community/public events, including speaking engagements, related to expertise.
**Relevant Skills & Experience**
- Bachelor of Science degree or certificate in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science or other comparable discipline such as Oceanography or Environmental Science. Higher degrees are an asset. Academic background must include coursework in synoptic meteorology, atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics or professional experience interpreting weather models and distilling weather/climate sources and raw data.
- Three to five years of directly related experience which includes proven ability in the field and knowledge of the broadcasting industry, including the essential ability to report for broadcast.
- Knowledge of WSI weather graphics system is an asset.
- An engaging on-air presence, strong presentation style and ease with live reporting are essential.
