The Team
The Demography section at BC Stats is responsible for producing population estimates and projections for British Columbia and sub-provincial areas. This established team consists of four dedicated professionals, primarily economists and data analysts specializing in time series modeling and statistical analysis. The team plays a vital role in providing population statistics and demographic analysis to inform planning and policy-making by provincial and local governments. Examples of recent projects include updating population projections to account for changes to immigration policy and developing population estimates for Indigenous communities. This team collaborates with multiple Ministries and government agencies and also liaises with Statistics Canada on the dissemination of population data and statistics.

The Role
As a Population Analyst, you will play a key role in delivering population statistics and demographic analyses to BC Stats clients and the public. Your core responsibilities will include preparing population data products for publication and reviewing them for accuracy. The Population Analyst also assists with developing and maintaining population projection models that are programmed using analytical coding languages.

As a member of the Demography team, you will have a unique birds-eye perspective on important demographic changes that are happening in British Columbia. Qualifications:

Education and Experience Requirements

We appreciate that non-traditional career paths may have developed a candidate's competency and alternate combinations of education and experience will be considered. A combination of education in a related field and/or relevant employment experience:

  • Master’s degree and a minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience
  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience
  • Diploma and a minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience
  • Certificate or related coursework and a minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience
  • Equivalent combination of related experience, education, and/or training.
  • Required relevant experience:
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in forecasting techniques, statistical modelling and conducting statistical analysis.
  • Experience in computer applications including spreadsheets (e.g. MS Excel), databases (e.g. MS Access, SQL Server), programming languages (e.g. R, Python), presentation (e.g. MS PowerPoint), and word-processing packages (e.g. MS Word).
  • Experience in gathering, analyzing, evaluating and interpreting information from diverse sources.
  • Experience in preparing and delivering written reports, management and executive briefings, and presentations to diverse audiences.

Preference MAY be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

  • Over two (2) years of relevant experience
  • Experience using analytical coding (e.g., R, SPSS, SAS, Python, database applications).
  • Experience working with spatial data and using GIS software such as ArcGIS.
  • Experience in the use, manipulation and reliability of large and complex databases.
  • Experience with Input-Output Modelling OR experience developing population/demographic estimates and projections, migration and immigration and other demographic forecasts
  • Experience measuring inter-national/inter-provincial flow of goods and services, investments and business conditions.

Remote work is allowed, this position can work up to full time from their home in British Columbia subject to an approved telework agreement.
