The Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) is Canada’s largest nurses’ union, advocating for the rights of nurses and health-care professionals across Ontario.

ONA is seeking to hire a WSIB Coordinator for our WSIB Appeals Team. This position provides WSIB Appeals services, mentorship, advice, and support to meet the service delivery needs of ONA and its membership. The incumbent will be a leader on the WSIB Appeals Team, responsible for mentoring, managing active file assignments, and supporting the WSIB Manager.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide advice on all aspects of the work performed by ONA’s WSIB Appeals Team, including issues of provincial significance.
  • Lead the team by providing guidance and mentorship on proceedings before the WSIB, including the Tribunal.
  • Orient, onboard, and train new LROs in consultation with the WSIB Manager.
  • Act as a strategic resource to the Legal Department and other ONA teams.
  • Provide non-managerial coverage and strategic advice to ONA’s Chief Legal Officer during the WSIB Manager’s absence.
  • Represent ONA members at WSIB tribunals, including WSIAT.
  • Conduct research, prepare, and litigate cases.
  • Coordinate and provide education to ONA staff and managers.
  • Review intake files and recommend assignments for the WSIB Team.
  • Support WSIB Specialists on complex files, such as WSIAT hearings.
  • Review and edit written and oral submissions and appeals documents.
  • Identify trends and emerging issues with the WSIB and recommend strategies to address them.
  • Provide reports to Management and assist with reports to the Board of Directors.
  • Coordinate education across the organization.
  • Identify and address risks and opportunities related to ONA's goals.
  • Conduct WSIB appeals from initiation to WSIAT hearings.
  • Keep abreast of legislative and policy changes affecting ONA members’ appeals.
  • Maintain member rights during the appeals process.
Qualifications:
  • Paralegal license or LL.B/Juris Doctor (J.D.).
  • 5 to 10 years of experience representing clients at WSIB tribunals.
  • Demonstrated advocacy, litigation, and presentation skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Education or training in alternative dispute resolution/mediation is an asset.
  • Experience in onboarding and mentoring junior staff is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and respond to urgent requests.
  • Strong teamwork skills and ability to build relationships with stakeholders.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills.
  • Advanced litigation and negotiation skills.
