Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Building Inspector Generalist to join our team at the City of Toronto. As a key member of our Building Department, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the Ontario Building Code and other applicable legislation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough inspections of construction and demolition sites to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations.
  • Review construction drawings and permit plans to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Investigate complaints and contraventions of building codes and regulations.
  • Provide instruction and guidance to contractors, architects, and engineers on building codes and regulations.
  • Collaborate with other divisions and agencies to ensure compliance with planning agreements and other regulations.
  • Prepare detailed and accurate reports on inspection results and other activities.
  • Represent the City in civil litigation and before the courts.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of building codes, regulations, and standards.
  • Provide training and mentorship to inspection staff.
Requirements
  • Post-secondary education in a professional discipline pertinent to the job function (e.g. architectural technology, building science, civil engineering technology, architecture, civil engineering).
  • Considerable experience with performing building inspections and reviewing construction drawings.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Building Code Act, and other applicable legislation.
  • Strong knowledge of the work performed by various professionals and sub-trades on a construction project.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, codes, and by-laws.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to deal effectively with customers and staff.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and manage work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
  • Skilled in the use of computer technologies.
  • Good written communication skills and ability to prepare concise and accurate reports.
  • Good interpersonal, problem-solving, and conflict management skills.
  • Physically capable of performing required duties and ability to work in all weather conditions.
