Job Summary:

The Regional Indigenous Project Coordinator will play a key role in building capacity within Indigenous communities through an empowerment and partnership model to address the unique health care needs of Indigenous peoples in the region. This position will work closely with the Regional Indigenous Navigator, Regional Health Program Leadership, and Indigenous leaders and communities to develop and maintain a foundational regional approach to address the unique health care needs of Indigenous peoples.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain relationships with regional Indigenous and non-Indigenous leaders and partners.
  • Develop and implement policies supporting traditional Indigenous practices.
  • Participate in ongoing updates and planning sessions with the Regional Manager, Regional Director, and Regional Vice President, and Indigenous patients and communities.
  • Work with partners across the region to ensure an integrated person-centred approach to the development and maintenance of programs for Indigenous peoples and communities.
  • Support the definition and sustainability of a self-identification process.
  • Develop a workload measurement tracking tool to capture activity related to support for Indigenous peoples to help inform sustainability.
  • Develop a regional inventory of health care related programs and services for Indigenous patients and families.
  • Support the development of key policies to ensure accurate and current resources supporting Indigenous care needs are available.
  • Support education and training for regional partners.
  • Engage with Spiritual Care Services, and Equity teams across the region to support knowledge transfer.
  • Monitor and record types of services provided for Indigenous patients, families, caregivers, and communities at the hospital and community level through existing reporting mechanisms.
  • Support and participate in regional and provincial health care research and innovation projects as appropriate.
  • Promote and strengthen collaboration regionally and, where appropriate, provincially.
  • Provide project support in the development of guidelines and standards for care for Indigenous patients, families, and caregivers.
  • Support the development of productive and sustainable relationships with Indigenous communities.
  • Complete an annual work plan identifying key activity, deliverables, performance measures, and timelines in collaboration with the Regional Indigenous Coordinator and Health Program leadership team.
  • Participate in Health Program Provincial meetings, communities of practice, etc. throughout the year.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent in the following areas: Health, Social Sciences, Education, or Indigenous Studies; PMP designation an asset.
  • Understanding of the health care pathway as it relates to Indigenous peoples, an asset.
  • Extensive knowledge of Indigenous people's language, culture, customs, traditions, and health/socioeconomic needs.
  • Strong insight into the importance of Reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
  • Effective communication skills, and ability to successfully build and sustain relationships.
  • Experience in change management principles and approaches.
  • Ability to persist through challenges, have a keen awareness of strengths and weaknesses, demonstrates empathy in interactions.
  • Ability to embrace mistakes as opportunities for learning and growth and understands the importance of contributing to and preserving a culture that fosters healthy, strong, and collaborative team dynamics.
  • Experience leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of system-level projects.
  • Working knowledge of local Indigenous governance systems, protocols, organizations, communities, and territories an asset.
