Indigenous Mental Health and Addictions Worker

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Executive Director.

AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY: To apply trauma-informed and strengths-based cultural methodologies to address mental health and wellness issues.

ANNUAL SALARY: $54,000.00

SCOPE

  • The Indigenous Mental Health and Addictions Worker (IMHAW) is tasked with offering support to the urban Indigenous population within the Region of Peel/Mississauga. The selected candidate is expected to cultivate a collaborative relationship with internal programs at The Indigenous Network, alongside various mental health and addictions care providers and community services to achieve the desired outcomes. The IMHAW will report directly to the Executive Director. A demonstrated understanding of Indigenous cultural practices and teachings is essential for this role.

KEY JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Deliver single-session peer support and/or counseling services, including assessment, care planning, and referrals for individuals, couples, and families facing crises or experiencing mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, addictions, domestic violence, suicidal thoughts, post-traumatic stress disorder, financial difficulties, legal issues, grief, caregiver stress, and relationship challenges.
  • Provide referrals to additional resources and collaborate with other professionals for clients as necessary.
  • Collaborate with The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) by attending meetings, engaging in case management, and providing updates on programs.
  • Assist clients in accessing necessary resources to achieve their health and wellness goals.
  • The IMHAW will provide support to urban Indigenous community members and their families, meeting clients as required. The worker will encourage clients to share their experiences and help them gain insights into their lives and relationships. Confidentiality is paramount, and meetings may occur in locations not associated with The Indigenous Network at mutually agreeable times.
  • Organize and schedule Elder/Healer Days for The Indigenous Network using the Flexbooker platform.
  • Plan and coordinate workshops that enhance awareness, provide education, and offer resources to address mental health and wellness needs.

SUPPORT WORK

  • Participate in inter-agency meetings or projects aimed at improving client services.
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings and the Annual General Meetings of The Indigenous Network.
  • Initiate, establish, and maintain relationships with clients while fostering trust and rapport.
  • Responsible for planning, organizing, leading, and facilitating online training and activities, including educational efforts during health crises.
  • Ensure crisis contacts are managed professionally, with referrals to appropriate resources and prompt follow-up.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Maintain accurate files, case records, and statistical data as required by the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres and The Indigenous Network.
  • Prepare necessary correspondence.
  • Complete administrative tasks as required by The Indigenous Network.
  • Prepare timely quarterly reports for the Local Health Integrated Network through The Indigenous Network as requested.
  • Commit to developing effective professional relationships with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous agencies.
  • Participate in meetings as directed by the Executive Director.
  • Uphold Indigenous values, including the seven grandfather teachings, traditions, language, balance, and competency.
  • Availability to work some evenings and/or weekends.
  • Sign and adhere to an Oath of Confidentiality and The Indigenous Network's Policies and Procedures upon commencement of employment, along with other necessary documents.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of a post-secondary diploma or degree in Social Work and/or certified counseling or an equivalent qualification.
  • A minimum of two years of direct mental health support experience (short-term counseling) working with individuals and families.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with concurrent disorders.
  • Experience with vulnerable populations and/or community engagement.

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of risk factors and risk assessment.
  • Familiarity with resources and services available to clients.
  • Understanding of professional standards and ethical guidelines for social workers and counselors.
  • Awareness of the history and current oppressions faced by individuals with moderate mental health challenges.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultural practices and teachings.

SKILLS

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Proven ability to work with diverse groups of people.
  • Strong assessment skills.
  • Ability to analyze individual and systemic issues affecting clients.
  • Proficient in computer skills, including MS Word, PowerPoint, and client databases.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
