Position Overview:

The University of Toronto is at the forefront of scientific innovation through its Acceleration Consortium (AC), which is committed to revolutionizing the landscape of scientific exploration and technology advancement. The AC is a collaborative network that integrates academia, industry, and government to harness the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, materials science, and high-throughput chemistry, aiming to establish self-driving laboratories (SDLs) that facilitate rapid material and molecule discovery.

Role Responsibilities:

As a Senior Research Scientist, you will play a pivotal role in the development of SDLs, which are designed to address critical global challenges such as climate change, water contamination, and public health crises. Your expertise will contribute to the creation of autonomous laboratories that efficiently synthesize and characterize materials essential for a sustainable future.

Key Duties Include:

  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to define the capabilities required for SDLs.
  • Designing and implementing innovative solutions for automated material synthesis and characterization.
  • Developing and optimizing hardware and software systems tailored for SDL operations.
  • Conducting independent research that leverages SDLs to explore and validate new materials and molecules.
  • Managing research projects in partnership with industry stakeholders and ensuring alignment with their objectives.
  • Preparing research proposals, manuscripts, and presentations for academic and industry audiences.

Qualifications:

Education: A Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of five years of experience in research and development, particularly in areas intersecting AI, automation, and chemistry.

Skills: Proficiency in effective communication, both written and verbal, and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
