About the Opportunity

Vancouver Island University (VIU) is seeking an exceptional researcher for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Lands Planning and Community Development. This prestigious position offers a unique opportunity to advance your research career while contributing to the university's mission of promoting social progress and economic prosperity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct innovative research in Indigenous Lands Planning and Community Development, with a focus on understanding pre-colonization land use patterns, the ongoing impacts of the reserve system on Rights and Title, and the reinterpretation of the Douglas Treaties through a planning lens.
  • Collaborate with faculty members and researchers to develop new areas of collaborative research and attract excellent graduate students to the MCP Program.
  • Teach undergraduate or graduate courses and participate in academic programs, including providing leadership for research and scholarly activity.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant field.
  • Exceptional research skills, with a strong track record of peer-reviewed publications and external research funding.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, collaborative research experience, and community consultation and involvement in the areas of First Nations Land Planning.
  • Ability to attract and mentor research trainees at all levels, with a particular emphasis on undergraduate students.

Salary and Benefits

The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary of approximately $120,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additionally, the university offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, as well as a pension plan.
