Job Description Summary

Job Title: Customer Support Application Specialist


At Renewable Energy Grid Solutions, we are seeking a highly skilled Customer Support Application Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our engineering department, you will be responsible for designing, programming, testing, and commissioning protection and control panels for our grid customers.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Designing protection and control panel mechanical layouts, single-line diagrams, schematic diagrams, power diagrams, control diagrams, and Bill of Materials using Autocad/Ebase/Oracle.
  • Performing engineering studies and analyses, such as short-circuit studies, protective device coordination, load flow, motor starting, and more.
  • Designing control logic solutions to meet customer requests, including complex control schemes like transfer schemes, synchronizing schemes, and auto-restoration schemes.
  • Fabricating relay setting files, including programming of protection and control elements, control logic, and communications settings.
  • Testing customized protection and control solutions in-house and at customer installations.
  • Providing field support, including commissioning of new applications.
  • Analyzing and troubleshooting field cases involving GE Multilin/other protection and control products.
  • Providing training and peer check/design support to other team members.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years' working experience in panel design, analyzing, and creation of single-line diagrams, schematic diagrams, control diagrams, and power diagrams related to relay protections and control using Autocad/Ebase.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 40% of the time.
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Excellent knowledge of power systems, protection schemes, and communication applications.
  • Experience in creating test procedures and maintenance procedures related to factory and site testing and commissioning protection panels.
  • Ability to apply advanced ideas in the technical engineering field to practical business problems.
  • Experience in programming the GE Multilin family/other relays, specifically the UR Family/other.
  • Experience in designing power system control schemes (transfer schemes, auto-restoration schemes).
  • Excellent understanding of theoretical bases for all major protection principles, including distance, line differential, transformer differential, bus, feeder, generator, and large motor protection.
  • Demonstrated team player, initiative to take the lead, and mentoring of other team members.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work in a multicultural environment.
  • Customer-focused.
  • Experience in turn-key protection and control projects.
  • Demonstrated record in developing protection and control applications.
  • Working knowledge of major test sets and short-circuit/setting coordination software.
  • Working knowledge of RTDS, ASPEN, EMTP, and MATLAB.
  • Familiarity with standard work and documentation procedures of electrical utilities.
  • Interdisciplinary experience, including metering, communications, substation automation, and integration.
  • Ability to present training courses and write technical papers.
  • Knowledge and experience with GE Digital Energy and 3rd Party Protection Relay products.
  • Working knowledge with EPLAN panel design tool.
  • Strong understanding and experience with CSA, UL, and CE requirements.
  • Lean/6 Sigma Green belt or Black belt certification preferred.
  • P.Eng Certified is an asset.
