Job Title: Human Resources Lead

The Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Human Resources Lead to join our team. As a key member of our organization, you will be responsible for providing human resources support to the SFSS and aiding in the administrative and staff relations of the Society.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Policy Development: Develop and implement best practices to enhance our existing policies.
  • Investigations & Performance Management: Conduct thorough investigations and support managers in performance management.
  • Grievance Management & Arbitration: Handle grievance management and arbitration processes efficiently.
  • Compensation: Oversee the administration of union reclassifications and compensation practices.
  • Collective Bargaining: Participate actively in collective bargaining to maintain a healthy employer-union relationship.
Essential Functions:
  • Alongside the VP Finance and Finance Coordinators, conduct payroll for staff and Board member stipends and ensure that all statutory and contractual requirements of the organization are met.
  • Work with the Executive to implement a performance management process for all staff.
  • Organize a yearly staff retreat with input from staff and the Executive Committee.
  • Act as one of the Employer representatives in bargaining activities during Collective Agreement renewal years.
  • Ensure the Bargaining Committee is convened, research and prepare for bargaining rounds, consult with legal counsel where necessary, and schedule staff meetings.
  • Work alongside the Executive to ensure the Board receives regular and relevant updates regarding SFSS internal operations.
  • Maintain up-to-date job descriptions and oversee all job postings at the direction of the HR and Personnel Committee.
  • Develop, distribute, and advertise all employment postings in collaboration with the Communications office.
  • Recruit, orient, train, coach, allocate tasks, review performance, and supervise administrative personnel.
  • Act as one of the Staff Liaison Officers alongside the President and maintain accurate, up-to-date, complete, and confidential personnel files.
  • Process or approve all staff absences and evaluate staff performance and grievances with the direction of the HR and Personnel committee.
  • Provide resources and support in cases of discipline and discharge of unionized staff.
  • Apply provisions within the Collective Agreement with direction from the HR and Personnel committee.
  • Maintain and implement the policies and procedures in the Personnel Policies.
  • Assist with and provide expertise, advice, and direction on human resource matters, notably the Collective Agreement, Personnel Policies, occupational health & safety, employment standards legislation, WCB requirements, staff benefits, and insurance.
  • Ensure that all staff members receive an orientation to the SFSS, their workplace, the Collective Agreement, and the Personnel Policies.
  • Track use of employee leave entitlements and maintain confidential personnel files alongside the President.
  • Collaborate with Return-to-Work Case Coordinators in Workplace Health Services to develop action plans for returning employees to the workplace.
  • Perform all other human resource duties assigned by the President, the Executive Committee, and the Board of Directors.
  • Answer a wide range of general employment-related enquiries from internal and external community.
  • Report at least weekly, in a transparent manner, all HR and personnel work activities to the President and the HR and Personnel Committee.
  • Attend and provide relevant updates at all Executive committee and council meetings.
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration or similar, with demonstrated academic preparation in human resources management and organizational behaviour.
  • CPHR designation.
  • 5 years of recent and related supervisory/management experience in a complex and dynamic unionized work environment, of which 3 years must be in a leadership role in human resources and/or labour relations management.
  • Thorough knowledge of current human resource management practice.
  • Experienced in the administration of collective agreements and the conduct of collective bargaining in a complex unionized environment.
  • Knowledge of provincial and federal legislation governing human resource and labour relations practices.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Experience in public sector environment is considered an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (both verbal and written) skills.
  • Excellent ability to provide advice and support decisions.
  • Ability to work with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to write accurate minutes and reports.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, initiative, and diplomacy.
  • Ability to work within broad parameters, competing deadlines/priorities, and with frequent interruptions.
  • Familiarity with the workings of HR information systems.
  • Demonstrated commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience will also be considered.

We offer competitive compensation with a range of: $80,000 - $90,000 annually along with an extensive benefits package including but not limited to a full range dental, extended health, and life insurance plans, leave provisions, and an initial annual vacation entitlement of 3-4 weeks. Subsequent salary increases are at the discretion of the Board of Directors.
