Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly qualified Sessional Lecturer to teach a course on Introduction to Database Management Systems at the University of Toronto. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering lectures, maintaining course administration, and supervising teaching assistants.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching: Deliver lectures on database management systems, including the relational data model, relational algebra, querying and updating databases, and application programming with SQL.
  • Course Administration: Maintain course websites, marking schemes, lectures, tutorials, assignments, tests, and final assessments.
  • Supervision: Supervise teaching assistants and ensure they are delivering tutorials and/or labs appropriately.
  • Grading: Manage grading for the course, which includes managing the breakdown of hours for TA duties and carrying out any grading not handled by TAs.
  • Coordination: Coordinate with other instructors to maintain consistency in course delivery, including using common assignments and a common final exam.
  • Grade Management: Manage grades and submit final course grades, including the timely completion and release of grades and feedback to students throughout the term.

Requirements:

  • Graduate Degree: A graduate degree in Computer Science or a closely related field is required.
  • Expertise: Demonstrated expertise in the topic area of the course is required.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are required.
  • Teaching Experience: Teaching experience at the university level or equivalent industry level is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous Teaching Experience: Previous experience teaching undergraduate courses in the field of Computer Science is preferred.
  • Teaching Excellence: Demonstrated evidence of excellence in teaching is preferred.
