Position Overview

As a valued member of the Health Sciences Centre team, the Clinical Support Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our patient care units. Reporting to the Manager of Patient Care or Nurse In-Charge, this individual will be responsible for receiving patients to the clinic/unit, ensuring accurate documentation, and acting as a communication link for the unit. Key responsibilities include answering telephone calls, determining urgency, and forwarding calls or taking and relaying messages. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for obtaining, assembling, and maintaining charts, transcribing physicians' orders, scheduling appointments/tests for patients, and obtaining test results. This role also involves performing a variety of tasks for the care and comfort of patients, preparing payroll information for the area, maintaining clinic/unit supplies, compiling statistical information, and performing other miscellaneous duties as required. The Clinical Support Specialist will also be responsible for entering patient data into applicable information systems and adhering to all HSC policy and procedures.

Requirements

  • Previous related work experience is preferred.
  • Current hospital-based information systems/programs; scheduling systems/programs are preferred.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Complete high school education, Manitoba standards.
  • Successful completion of a recognized Unit Clerk training program is required.
  • Medical terminology (75% pass mark) is required.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Typing/keyboarding skills minimum 40 wpm are required.
  • Excellent command of the English language (both oral and written) is essential.
  • Ability to organize, manage time, and prioritize workload is crucial.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, seeking assistance as necessary.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to recognize and pursue self-development opportunities.
  • Ability to respond to a variety of simultaneous demands.
  • Ability to operate information technology equipment as required, e.g. fax, photocopier, computer, etc.
  • Preference will be given to candidates competent in an Aboriginal language and/or knowledgeable in Aboriginal customs, beliefs, and practices.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to function effectively in a stressful environment with frequent interruptions.
