Clinical Support Specialist

Position Overview
As a key member of the Health Sciences Centre team, the Clinical Support Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our patient care units. Reporting to the Manager of Patient Care or Nurse In-Charge, this individual will be responsible for receiving patients to the clinic/unit, ensuring accurate documentation, and acting as a communication link for the unit.
Key Responsibilities
- Receiving patients to the clinic/unit and ensuring appropriate documentation is completed accurately.
- Acting as a communication link for the unit, answering telephone calls, determining urgency, and forwarding calls or taking and relaying messages.
- Obtaining, assembling, and maintaining charts.
- Transcribing physicians' orders.
- Scheduling appointments/tests for patients and obtaining test results.
- Performing a variety of tasks for the care and comfort of patients.
- Preparing payroll information for the area.
- Maintaining clinic/unit supplies, compiling statistical information, and performing other miscellaneous duties as required.
- Entering patient data into applicable information systems.
Requirements
- Previous related work experience preferred.
- Current hospital-based information systems/programs; scheduling systems/programs preferred.
- Complete high school education, Manitoba standards.
- Successful completion of a recognized Unit Clerk training program required.
- Medical terminology (75% pass mark) required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Typing/keyboarding skills minimum 40 wpm required.
- Excellent command of the English language (both oral and written).
- Ability to organize, manage time, and prioritize workload.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team and seek assistance as necessary.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to recognize and pursue self-development opportunities.
- Ability to respond to a variety of simultaneous demands.
- Ability to operate information technology equipment as required, e.g. fax, photocopier, computer, etc.
Working Conditions
- Must be able to function effectively in a stressful environment with frequent interruptions.
