The Opportunity

The Operations Supervisor role is a critical component of the Olds College Smart Farm, a key part of our Smart Agriculture Ecosystem and Growing 2025 Strategic Plan. As Operations Supervisor, you will work closely with the Smart Farm Director and Assistant Manager to provide leadership and direction of daily and weekly operational activities in all aspects of the Olds College Smart Farm. Your primary focus will be on ensuring the safe and effective delivery of services to academic programming and the Olds College Centre for Innovation (OCCI) and other user groups.

Key Responsibilities
  • Front-Line Supervision of Operations: Oversee day-to-day operations, including supervision of Smart Farm operational staff, and ensure scheduling and project objectives are achieved.
  • Animal Husbandry & Care: Monitor animal welfare and health in feedlot and in pasture, perform or assign treatments as required, and lead calving and lambing operations with assistance from farm staff and academic teams.
  • Supervision and Leadership: Create and monitor a shift schedule for team members, grant bi-weekly approval for overtime and vacation requests, and participate in the recruitment, selection, support, supervision, and management of the smart farm team members.
Requirements
  • A minimum of 2 years of post-secondary education in a related field or a minimum of 5 years related work experience in a mixed livestock and land-based farm operation.
  • Experience with managing people and directing the work of others.
  • Crop production experience with a base knowledge of agronomic principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated animal husbandry experience and ability to ensure livestock well-being, including the diagnosis and treatment of any health concerns in a pasture and feedlot setting.
