About the Role:

The Assistant Chief is a key leadership position within Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency, responsible for supporting the annual business plan and managing operating and capital budgets for assigned portfolios.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supports the development and implementation of strategic plans to achieve departmental goals and objectives.
  • Manages budgets and resources to ensure effective and efficient service delivery.
  • Provides guidance and oversight to District Chiefs, Division Chiefs, and other assigned staff.
  • Ensures compliance with operational guidelines, occupational health and safety standards, and regulations.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with regulatory authorities and stakeholders to further the organization's goals.
  • Responds to emergency situations and assumes the role of Incident Commander as required.
  • Administers performance management and progressive discipline processes.
  • Participates in on-call duty rotations and responds to large-scale emergency incidents.
  • Represents the Deputy Chief and/or Fire Chief at community events and meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Fire Science or Emergency Management, Public Administration, Business Administration, or related discipline.
  • Minimum ten years' experience in fire/emergency services, with knowledge of various facets of fire/emergency operations.
  • Minimum three years' experience at the District Chief or Division Chief level or equivalent Fire Management positions.
  • Incident Command System (ICS) – level 300 is an asset.
