Veterinarian Leader in Laboratory Animal Care

Veterinarians are essential professionals responsible for ensuring the health and well-being of laboratory animals. This position requires a strong background in veterinary medicine, with expertise in laboratory animal science and management. As a leader in this field, you will oversee daily operations, provide medical care, and collaborate with research teams to ensure compliance with regulations and company policies.
Main Responsibilities
- Develop and implement laboratory animal science programs, including veterinary care, animal welfare, and regulatory compliance.
- Partner with research teams to provide proactive guidance and expertise on protocols and procedures.
- Institute methods to prevent, control, diagnose, and treat diseases and injuries.
- Provide expertise and consultation on matters related to animal health and welfare, including anesthesia, analgesia, pain relief, and euthanasia methods.
- Ensure daily observation of all animals by personnel to assess their health and well-being.
- Provide oversight of quarantine programs, vendor management, and animal behavior and enrichment programs.
- Manage veterinary staff, providing training and documentation as necessary.
- Collaborate with the training program on developing new techniques and procedural improvements.
- Serve on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) as a member.
- Provide emergency coverage on weekends and holidays as scheduled.
- Participate in policy development and implementation, maintaining AAALAC accreditation standards.
Requirements
- Accredited veterinary school and 10 years of experience in laboratory animal medicine or equivalent education and experience deemed appropriate by APHIS administrator.
- License to practice veterinary medicine in California.
- Experience with biosafety, crisis management, and occupational health & safety training.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary to interact with various levels of personnel and clients.
Estimated Salary Range: $180,000-$250,000 per year, commensurate with work experience.
