Job Summary

Mackenzie Health is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to fill the role of Extern Mentor Coordinator. This is a temporary full-time position that requires a regulated healthcare professional with good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario and/or College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO).

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the integration and onboarding of all externs at the organizational and unit level.
  • Create, adapt, and deliver orientation and learning resources to ensure a smooth transition for externs.
  • Support extern scheduling and departmental assignment to optimize their learning experience.
  • Aid in the integration of team processes and role clarity to ensure a cohesive and efficient team environment.
  • Maintain regular unit presence to support ongoing education needs and tracking of required skills and competencies.
  • Provide ongoing monitoring and evaluations of extern role to ensure they are meeting their full potential.
  • Provide mentorship, education, and professional development opportunities to externs to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  • Serve as a liaison between unit leadership, Professional Practice, and Operations to ensure seamless communication and collaboration.

Requirements

  • Regulated healthcare professional with good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario and/or College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO).
  • 2-3 years of acute care experience required.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.

  • Outstanding communication skills.
  • Previous experience teaching, working with learners, and/or precepting.
  • Previous experience as a Clinical Instructor or placement supervisor.
  • Demonstrated leadership, change management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of infection prevention and control practices.
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy.
  • Demonstrated understanding and compliance with patient and staff safety policies and procedures that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all.
  • Commitment to providing an exceptional experience for staff and clients within a challenging and exciting healthcare environment.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Effectively uses empathy in interactions with others.
