Support Services Coordinator

Broadview Village has 40+ years of experience in delivering exceptional care and services. We are currently seeking a Part-Time Residential Counsellor to join our team.
This role reports to the Residential Manager and is assigned to work in the Toronto area. The position works 16 hours per week, scheduled Sunday and Monday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and/or 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm, rotating as needed. Flexibility is required to meet program needs.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for creating and implementing programming in areas such as personal care & hygiene, advocacy, and community integration. They will be able to work collaboratively within a team and with various stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, consultants, colleagues, community members, family members, and friends.
This position requires a resilient direct support professional who can navigate conflict, overcome obstacles, and provide creative support to individuals in crisis. The Residential Counsellor must ensure that their activities comply with established legislation, policies, and procedures, including Employment Standards; Occupational Health & Safety Standards; Collective Agreements; Payroll Procedures; Salvation Army Accreditation; and Services and Supports to Promote the Social Inclusion of Persons with Developmental Disabilities Act, 2008 (SIPDDA).
Key Responsibilities:
- Providing support for residents' personal development through individual support planning and advocating on their behalf or facilitating self-advocacy with community supports, in collaboration with colleagues and other healthcare professionals.
- Completing documentation and maintaining records as required.
- Medication administration.
- Ensuring learning opportunities are provided using agency and community resources.
- Fostering independence in residents, including supervising and assisting with meal preparation and clean-up.
- Maintaining cleanliness of the program/site and ensuring health and safety protocols are followed.
- Providing orientation and/or support to co-workers, students, volunteers, and/or family members.
- Following and promoting the agencies' and House program's goal and philosophy.
- Other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to dirt, bodily fluids, bodily waste.
- Noisy environment.
- Dealing with angry and abusive people.
- Handling garbage.
- Verbal abuse.
- Odours.
- Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs. and apply effective body mechanics to meet the physical demands of the position.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
- Completed Developmental Services Worker Diploma or other degree/diploma related to human services preferred.
- Valid and current Standard First Aid Certificate and CPR Level C Certificate, used regularly.
- Ability to achieve Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certificate upon hire and use it regularly.
Experience and Knowledge:
- Minimum 6-12 months' experience working with people with developmental disabilities and preferably those with dual diagnosis of mental health challenges and developmental disabilities.
- Experience implementing Individual Support Plans.
- Medication administration experience preferred.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Strong counselling/de-escalation support required.
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening, completed no less than 2 months prior to date of hire.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for The Salvation Army's mission and purpose in Canada and its implications related to position responsibilities.
