Job Summary

As a Personal Support Worker at VON Canada, you will play a vital role in providing companionship, personal care, and health maintenance services to clients in their homes or communities. This position requires a compassionate and detail-oriented individual who can work effectively in a multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of clients and promote their independence and well-being.

Key Responsibilities
  • Observe and evaluate clients' homes, personal situations, and care plans to identify areas for improvement and ensure their needs are met.
  • Contribute to the development of personalized care plans under the direction of the Personal Support Program Manager.
  • Implement changes to care plans as needed, ensuring safety, liability, and financial considerations are taken into account.
  • Report any changes in clients' needs or situations to the immediate supervisor or Personal Support Program Manager.
  • Perform personal support tasks, including light cleaning, meal preparation, and household safety monitoring, as needed.
  • Provide personal care, such as assisting with walking, climbing stairs, and personal hygiene, as directed by the Personal Support Program Manager or immediate supervisor.
  • Provide respite care and support to clients' families as required.
  • Organize daily activities, setting priorities for personal support and other tasks under the direction of the Personal Support Program Manager or immediate supervisor.
  • Complete daily call checks and other forms as required to maintain effective service delivery.
  • Assess clients' communication patterns and abilities.
  • Communicate with healthcare teams regarding clients' needs and inform supervisors of any changes or concerns.
  • Comply with Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and VON policies and procedures.
  • Function in accordance with VON's risk management policies and procedures to promote client safety.
Requirements
  • High school diploma.
  • Secondary school education preferred.
  • CCA Certification required in Nova Scotia.
  • Must have a certificate in Home Support Worker (Level I, II, III), Personal Support Worker program, or Health Care Aide.
  • Must have a current Standard First Aid Certificate or CPR level C Certificate, if applicable to the work being performed.
  • Some household management experience and experience working with elderly or ill individuals or children.
Skills and Abilities
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Able to communicate effectively with clients and families in a clear and respectful manner.
  • Good assessment skills.
  • Awareness of community resources.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team or independently as required.
  • Able to take direction well.
  • Ability to adjust to working in different social and economic environments.
  • Capacity to adhere to strict confidentiality.
Other Requirements
  • Must have access to a personal vehicle for work and possess a current driver's license and proof of vehicle insurance.
  • A current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check.
  • A Vulnerable Sector Search and/or a Child Abuse Registry Check may be required.
  • Available to work flexible hours.
  • The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be required.
