As a key figure in the Office of the Fire Marshal, you will be instrumental in safeguarding communities across Ontario by conducting thorough fire investigations, which will inform innovative fire prevention initiatives.

Note: Availability for after-hours work may be required to address emergency situations.

About the Office of the Fire Marshal:

The Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) is dedicated to reducing the loss of life and property due to fire. We assist municipalities and fire departments in enhancing fire protection and prevention services. The OFM conducts fire investigations across the province to determine the origin, cause, and circumstances of significant fires, including those resulting in fatalities or serious injuries, and collaborates with various public safety partners to foster a secure environment for all Ontario residents.

  • Empower your professional staff to reach their full potential, promoting a culture of diversity, inclusion, equity, and excellence.
  • Manage and enhance staff performance, fostering team cohesion and maximizing engagement.
  • Provide strategic leadership while meeting operational and performance targets.
  • Collaborate with other Fire Investigations Managers to strengthen team delivery systems, including staff development and succession planning.
  • Oversee the OFM's role in Major Fire Investigations, directing investigations and providing necessary expertise.
  • Support the management of provincial CBRNE/Hazmat/USAR programs.
  • Develop and deliver training programs for OFM staff, including certification initiatives.
  • Advise municipalities and fire departments on fire investigation matters.
  • Participate in after-hours operations, being available for calls from the Provincial Operations Centre.

Qualifications:

Mandatory:

  • A valid Ontario Driver's Licence (Class 'G').
  • Successful completion of Enhanced Security Screening.

Leadership Skills:

  • Proven experience in inspiring and mentoring a technical team to achieve results.
  • Ability to incorporate inclusion and diversity principles into management practices.
  • Experience in fostering continuous improvement and excellence.
  • Capability to develop and deliver training programs and monitor training needs.
  • Ability to articulate and promote the goals of Fire Investigation Services.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Understanding of fire investigation procedures, relevant codes, and OFM policies.
  • Experience with investigative techniques and legal frameworks.
  • Knowledge of fire department operations and hazardous materials.
  • Ability to identify criminal involvement in incidents.
  • Familiarity with courtroom procedures and expert witness responsibilities.

Program Management Skills:

  • Knowledge of change management principles and experience leading initiatives.
  • Understanding of budgetary processes and fiscal management.
  • Experience in preparing business cases and managing procurement.
  • Strong analytical skills for decision-making.
  • Political acuity to navigate complex issues.

Communication and Relationship Management:

  • Ability to provide guidance and prepare reports for diverse audiences.
  • Proven negotiation and mediation skills.
  • Experience in liaising with peers to ensure consistent program application.
