Role Overview:

The position of Associate Dean, Indigenous Education is pivotal in advancing the college's commitment to Indigenous learning and engagement. Reporting directly to the Dean, this role requires collaboration with various departments, including Program Planning and the Centre for Teaching and Learning. The Associate Dean will embody the institution's mission and strategic objectives while being guided by key frameworks such as CiCan's Indigenous Education Protocol and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action. This role is designed for an educator and advocate who fosters teamwork and communication to enhance Indigenous programming and methodologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate an innovative culture that enhances the quality and reach of Indigenous Education programs.
  • Facilitate the integration of Indigenous perspectives and histories into core academic offerings.
  • Advocate for Indigenous Education within the institution, ensuring alignment with academic planning and resource allocation.
  • Contribute to the development of a strategic plan for Indigenous Education and Engagement.
  • Manage budgets for Indigenous Education initiatives and identify innovative funding solutions.
  • Oversee the creation and revision of pedagogical resources that support the incorporation of Indigenous knowledge in teaching.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to recruit and retain faculty with expertise in Indigenous cultures and educational practices.
  • Expand initiatives that enhance access to Indigenous knowledge and resources across the institution.
  • Engage with Indigenous communities and organizations to foster collaboration and share best practices.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • An Indigenous Scholar with substantial knowledge of Indigenous epistemologies and methodologies.
  • A Master’s degree (PhD preferred) in Indigenous Studies, Education, or a related field, with at least five years of relevant experience in post-secondary education.

Experience:

  • Proven ability to build relationships and facilitate teamwork to inspire and empower others.
  • Strong communication and analytical skills, with a deep understanding of the post-secondary landscape.
  • Experience in fostering collaborative relationships between Indigenous communities and educational institutions.
  • Familiarity with Truth & Reconciliation recommendations and relevant educational policies.
  • Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to handle multiple initiatives effectively.
  • Excellent leadership and organizational skills, with experience in a unionized environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to manage relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Flexibility and creativity in problem-solving and task management.
  • Teaching experience, particularly in curriculum development, is considered an asset.
