Position Overview:

This role is under the supervision of the Unit 35 Manager (Rehabilitation) and the Area Manager for Allied Health. The selected individual will focus on managing adult patients facing challenges with swallowing and communication across two primary clinical environments:

  • Unit 35 Inpatient Rehabilitation: Engaging in a collaborative interdisciplinary approach for three days each week, providing intensive rehabilitation services for individuals with neurological conditions.
  • Rural Community Outreach: Serving 1 to 2 communities for two days weekly, the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) will deliver comprehensive care across various settings, including acute care, long-term care, outpatient rehabilitation, supportive living, and home care.
The SLP will work in close partnership with other healthcare professionals, necessitating exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities. Strong self-management skills and adaptability are critical for success in this role. The SLP will uphold evidence-based clinical practices that align with professional standards. You will be part of a cohesive team that fosters a collaborative and supportive atmosphere. The Central Zone SLP service operates as a multisite program, with rural assignments subject to change based on service requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Speech Language Pathologist, your role will encompass both independent clinical practice and teamwork with external partners. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing prevention strategies, health promotion, and comprehensive assessments.
  • Conducting interventions and managing cases effectively.
  • Collaborating in the planning, coordination, and delivery of rehabilitation services alongside patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Providing mentorship and clinical oversight to students and junior staff as necessary.
  • Utilizing your clinical knowledge to drive quality improvement initiatives, service integration, and program development.
Required Qualifications:

A Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology is essential. Candidates must hold an active or eligible registration and practice permit with the Alberta College of Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists (ACSLPA).

Preferred Qualifications:

Expertise in clinical and instrumental (VFSS) swallowing assessments and interventions. Experience in evaluating and treating adult patients with acquired communication disorders, particularly in stroke and neurology cases. Previous experience in rehabilitation settings is advantageous.
