Main Purpose and Function

The Engineering Services department plays a vital role in maintaining the city's infrastructure by providing essential services such as waste management, drainage, and traffic regulation. These services are crucial for the well-being of the community.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

The Spare Driver in Collections is responsible for operating Automated/Semi-Automated trucks to collect waste and green bin materials from designated routes throughout the city. This role requires drivers to ensure safety while delivering exceptional customer service. Responsibilities include:

  • Exiting the vehicle to assist with overturned totes and maintaining professionalism while interacting with the public.
  • Performing additional tasks within the Sanitation Services Branch when not engaged in curbside collection.

The Sanitation Services Branch operates year-round, and candidates must be prepared for shift work as needed. The standard Collections shift runs from early morning to mid-afternoon, with potential training sessions scheduled on weekends. Availability must align with the Branch's operational needs to ensure continued employment.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of high school and relevant experience in labor and truck operation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Prior experience in waste collection is preferred.
  • Understanding of safe work practices.
  • Familiarity with tools and equipment used in waste management.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound judgments in routine tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with the public.
  • Physical capability to perform heavy lifting and navigate various terrains.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in diverse weather conditions.

Driver's License and Record Checks:

  • A valid Class 3 BC Driver's License with Air Brakes or higher is required, along with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Candidates must provide a Commercial Driving Records Abstract and Insurance and Claims History for review.

Salary Information: Base Salary: $33.06 per hour. Driving rate: $36.05 per hour. Productivity Bonus: $37.33. Employees receive 12% of their base salary in lieu of benefits.
