Main Purpose and Function

The Engineering Services department plays a crucial role in fulfilling the city's objectives by delivering essential services and maintaining public works facilities. These services encompass vital functions such as water supply, waste management, drainage, street lighting, and traffic regulation.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

The Spare Driver in Collections is responsible for operating Automated/Semi-Automated Trucks to collect curbside waste and green bin materials. Assigned to specific routes throughout the city, drivers must ensure safe operations while providing exemplary customer service. Responsibilities include exiting the vehicle to assist with overturned totes and maintaining professionalism while navigating shared roadways. When not engaged in curbside collection, Spare Drivers may be tasked with additional duties within the Sanitation Services Branch.

The Sanitation Services Branch operates year-round, and candidates must be prepared for shift work as required. The standard Collections shift runs from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday, with potential training sessions scheduled on weekends. Availability must align with branch expectations to maintain employment.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of high school and relevant experience in laboring and truck driving.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Prior experience in waste collection is preferred. Familiarity with recycling processes is advantageous.
  • Understanding of safe work practices.
  • Proficient knowledge of tools, materials, and equipment utilized in the role.
  • Awareness of the branch's functions and established operational practices.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in routine tasks.
  • Skill in addressing public inquiries with courtesy and respect.
  • Competence in using various tools and equipment.
  • Physical capability to perform demanding labor, including lifting and maneuvering heavy objects.
  • Ability to work outdoors in diverse weather conditions and on uneven surfaces.

Driver's License and Record Checks:

  • A valid Class 3 BC Driver's License with Air Brakes or higher and a satisfactory National Safety Code driving record are required.
  • Candidates must provide the following documentation for consideration:
    • Commercial Driving Records Abstract for the past 5 years.
    • Insurance and Claims History for the past 5 years.

Salary Information: Base Salary: $33.06 per hour. Driving rate: $36.05 per hour. Productivity Bonus: $37.33. Employees receive 12% of their base salary in lieu of benefits.
