Overview of Responsibilities

The Engineering Services division plays a crucial role in fulfilling the City's mission by delivering essential services and maintaining public infrastructure. This includes vital functions such as water supply, sewage management, drainage systems, waste collection, street maintenance, and public lighting, alongside regulatory duties like traffic management, parking oversight, transportation planning, and safeguarding utility corridors.

Key Responsibilities

The Spare Driver in the Collections unit is tasked with operating Automated/Semi-Automated Trucks for the purpose of collecting residential waste and green bin materials. Drivers are assigned specific routes throughout the city and are expected to operate their vehicles safely while providing exemplary customer service to the community. It is essential for drivers to exit their vehicles to address any overturned bins and to interact courteously and professionally with other road users and service personnel. In instances where curbside collection is not required, Spare Drivers may be redirected to perform other duties within the Sanitation Services Branch.

The Sanitation Services Branch operates year-round, and candidates must be prepared to work shifts as needed. The standard Collections shift runs from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Training sessions may occur on weekends, and successful candidates must ensure their availability aligns with the Branch's operational needs to maintain employment.

Candidates may be required to undergo functional and physical assessments related to the specific demands of the position.

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Completion of high school and experience in labor and truck operation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Previous experience in waste collection is preferred. Familiarity with collection and recycling processes is advantageous. Understanding of safe work practices. Proficient knowledge of tools, materials, and equipment utilized in the role. Basic understanding of the branch's functions and established work practices. Ability to exercise independent judgment in routine tasks. Competence in addressing public inquiries with respect and courtesy. Proficient in using various tools and equipment. Adequate physical strength, stamina, and coordination to perform demanding physical tasks. Capability to lift, push, and pull heavy items. Ability to maintain mobility through walking or standing for extended periods, with frequent bending or twisting. Comfort working near moving machinery and in high-traffic environments. Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on uneven terrain. Proficient in utilizing a range of tools and equipment.

Driver's License and Record Requirements:

A valid Class 3 BC Driver's License with Air Brakes or higher, along with a satisfactory National Safety Code driving record. Candidates with unsatisfactory driving records will undergo further review. Applicants must provide the following documentation for consideration: Commercial Driving Records Abstract (N Print) for the past five years (dated no more than 14 days prior to this posting) and Insurance and Claims History for the past five years (also dated no more than 14 days prior to this posting).
