Role Overview

The ideal candidate will undertake three key responsibilities: mitigating risk and ensuring adherence to privacy, employment, and other pertinent laws and regulations at a corporate level, drafting and modifying contracts for our clients and suppliers, and offering strategic legal counsel to facilitate our company's growth.

This position requires in-person attendance at our Sherwood Park, Alberta office.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Overseeing third-party contracts, which involves reviewing contract terms, identifying potential issues (e.g., financial, operational), drafting and negotiating amendments, ensuring compliance with contract requirements, and managing renewals, including negotiating new terms.
  • Drafting, reviewing, and managing corporate client contracts, ensuring compliance with internal terms (e.g., accounting practices, software development, customer support), as well as reviewing client-proposed amendments and participating in client meetings to clarify any modifications.
  • Acting as the company Privacy Officer, responsible for reviewing our privacy policy to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and addressing any privacy complaints.
  • Monitoring changes in legislation, court/regulatory decisions, and industry best practices to ensure the organization effectively manages regulatory compliance.
  • Developing new and refining existing corporate compliance practices and controls.
  • Creating and enhancing training materials to educate team members on regulatory obligations (e.g., privacy legislation), legal responsibilities (e.g., internal and third-party contract terms), operational requirements (e.g., SOC compliance), and risk management strategies.
  • Providing legal advice that balances risk management with strategic decision-making, overseeing the drafting, review, and negotiation of various legal documents and agreements to ensure they align with the company's objectives and legal standards.
  • Serving as the internal administrator for the Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP).

Qualifications:

  • Member in good standing of a provincial Bar in Canada, preferably in Alberta.
  • A successful track record of at least 4 years of corporate legal experience, either in-house or with a reputable law firm.
  • Experience with ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Program) is considered an asset.

Compensation: $150,000 - $180,000 annually. Salary ranges are determined by experience, reflecting the unique skills each individual brings to the position.
